We had the good fortune of connecting with Jinnie & Michelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jinnie & Michelle, what do you attribute your success to?
Friendship. We’ve been friends for 28 years and this has been really important in the development of our business in terms of aesthetics. There is just a synergy between us. And there is a real motivation for us to work hard and achieve our goals with this company because there is a deep love for each others success. It’s kind of a Failure Is Not An Option situation. The inherent trust and ease of communication that comes with such a long history permeates all aspects of our business. We feel the highs and lows of being business owners together and there is a comfort in that.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Let’s face it, our Scamp is the coolest. She was created in 1979 and her look is just as relevant and cool now as it was then. We gave birth to this business in January 2020, then, in March 2020 Covid hit and we all know that the Event Industry, especially in LA, took a really hard hit. We started this business with nothing. We didn’t get a hand out. From inception til now it’s been blood sweat and tears, both literally and figuratively. We take pride in bringing celebration vibes to your event but do not be mistaken, running this operation is a very physical exercise for us. The fact that we can manage her on the roads is a feat in and of itself. We’ve practiced maneuvering our Scamp in parking lots in the wee hours of the night just to spare us the humiliation of looking ridiculous to any passers by. Luckily, we figured it out. This was huge for us. We didn’t realize how physically demanding it would be. Copper + Moon is a service we would hire. We like to think that we represent a really cool California vibe. The best of California. That laid back classy girl who’s all about easy good times and being surrounded by what brings us joy. Our model is all about environmental sustainability where possible with the products we use including operating electrical with a solar generator. It makes us happy to have found a way to do this.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Coffee and Breakfast at Cafe on 27 in Topanga Canyon on the way to the beach. Probably an afternoon at El Matador Beach. Any of the amazing museums or galleries we have: Fahey-Klein which is a photography gallery on La Brea, Norton Simon, LACMA, Broad. Ice Cream at Bumsan Organic Milk bar. And depending on the mood dinner at Playita Mariscos in Silverlake, Pine and Crane in Silverlake or Felix in Venice or our go to Mizlala in Sherman Oaks. Cap the night with drinks at Cafe Stella, Covell or HMS Bounty.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
