We had the good fortune of connecting with Joanna Bea Shultz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joanna Bea, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Bea, short for my middle name Beatrice, has always been a dream of mine. To create one of a kind things and label them as “Bea” has been something I’ve done since I was 15 years old. My desire to have a brand called Bea has existed long before I knew upholstery or furniture making.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am coming after the furniture industry in a way they ( or anyone ) never saw coming. My art via upholstery and furniture will reignite what furniture means to us as a society, as consumers, and much more.

The Dumpster Sofa is my most clear taste of what my designs consist of. Using a metal, rusted dumpster, I had the front of the metal garbage bin cut down from the front, and added a foundation, and using red velvet attached diamond tufting. The contrast of trash and elegance, metal and plush velvet, sofa and dumpster comes together in a profound, harmonious way. Be it an old man, or a young child: the dumpster sofa is something that people react to, for both its uniqueness but also its very practical purpose as a sofa.

My art will demonstrate the skillsets honed within my trade of upholstery, while debuting furniture in a truly unforeseen way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love thrifting in LA – I love Los Feliz and Echo Park weekend pop ups or even dare I say driving to Long Beach.

I’d take them to a dodger game for sure

Walk from Marina Del Rey to Santa Monica – Abott Kinney and chill

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout is myself.

Ive trusted myself this whole damn time… even when it made no sense and I wanted to give up.

I don’t have someone I can thank for my success, its really taken hard ass work.
