We had the good fortune of connecting with Jody Sterling and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jody, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
The end goal is to have created multiple products that will allow the hairstylist to worker smarter not harder which in return will create longevity in their careers.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a single mother of a beautiful son and a cosmetologist of 33 years and salon owner of 16 located in Long Beach California . The balancing act is very challenging but not impossible. My son has always been my first priority and being a single mother it was very important to have a strong structure to help him with all his needs but to also focus on running a success business. The lessons I learned along the way was to go with what I believe that would be best for my business and never to be afraid to ask for help. I always place myself in the rooms where people were smarter than me and willing to share. In 2017 I received a utility patent on the first commercial hair extension dryer in the U.S Sterling Dryer and Feb this year I received another utility patent for Dry Assist both dryers cuts the drying time down by 50% or more for hairstylist who offer hair extensions and for the consumer. I am proud to be a black female inventor and patent holder. I most proud to have created these products for my industry. I am also the inventor of Pretty Nail Tool a multi functional nail tool that assist the avid nail wearer with retracting their credit card from atm, gas pumps and is also a bottle and can opener. Patent pending product.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok let’s start with food I am a vegetarian so I would take my guest to Jackfruit Cafe the best jackfruit dishes ever and to then to the beaches here in Long Beach. And for dinner we would do The Attic on Broadway great food , music and the drinks are amazing. 2nd day we would check out Baldwin Hills for shopping and Simply Wholesome and then over to Harold and Belles for dinner and Pips on Labrea for some live music and maybe some poetry at Da poetry lounge .

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to acknowledge my mentor Mr. Andre Edwards coach & master hair cutter and Lafaye Davenport owner of Simple Raw Hair Salons who taught me how to run a success hair salon .
