We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Killinger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joe, how do you think about risk?
Risk can be a brutal enemy or a beautiful friend, before you even begin down a path you must consider how risk can affect the path you are choosing. I always consider my downside before taking on a new project, I look at every variable I can come up with and plan on a few I am currently not thinking about, over the years I have learned there are almost always some outlying variables I did not consider. The next step is to understand what a loss can cost me, time, money, my health due to the stress, what is my comfort level if I were to have to pivot or stop moving forward on this path. The fun part is considering the upside, what can I do while I am on this new path, what are my goals and how to achieve them.
I have started multiple companies, one failed, one was sold and I am currently invested in 3 real estate related companies and one media company. Joekillinger.co, Commercial Brokers Int., Icon Capital Advisers, and The Affiliate Network. My one failure wasn’t a big financial loss but we had to close it down and let our team go and many of them had become good friends, that was the hardest part of the entire situation. What we didn’t take into account with this company was a major player seeing us moving into the market and them offering our clients one year contracts for free to get us out of the market. That one hurt.
I try to keep my risk levels as low as possible because it doesn’t just affect me, your employees, family, vendors and partners are all affected by your decisions.
There is only one company I have on my own, the rest I have invested in were started with a partner or multiple partners, having a great partner can help cut a good amount of risk as they may see something you don’t.
I have taken a lot of risk in my career and what that has taught me is to communicate, educate and never stop asking questions. Having direct communication to your team, others in the business, and mentors will cut a lot of your risk…but here’s the biggest risk reducer….TALK LESS LISTEN MORE!
What should our readers know about your business?
The only company I have on my own is my brand joekillinger.co, it’s an educational platform for real estate entrepreneurs. When I started in the real estate business there was little to no mentoring happening, this made it very difficult to get started. I decided a few years ago that when I could I would create a platform to help the younger generation find their path in real estate brokerage or real estate investing. This platform is now helping many aspiring real estate agents/investors find their path. We are now moving onto the next phase of speaking at multiple real estate groups around the U.S., as well as focusing more attention on my youtube channel, we have managed to land some incredible guests that bring a lot of value to our community,
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am not a native Californian so when people come to visit I usually give them a tour, at this point I may just buy a van and put-LOS ANGELES TOURS BY JOE- along the side. I love Malibu so we usually start there, usually at The Sunset Restaurant and work our way back down the coast to the city. The Getty Villa is on the way back so I like to make a stop there and enjoy the beautiful art and a good coffee.
During the week we always have to hit Rodeo blvd. for some window shopping and people watching, it’s always a good time to grab brunch and catch up. The Hollywood walk of fame is always on the list as well, seeing the stars from days gone by is always fun. After a long day of seeing the sites it’s always nice to close out the day with a drink at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel or the lounge at the Bel Air Hotel.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout definitely go’s out to my parents. My mother was the one that pushed me the most, she wanted to see good grades, work hard in your community, and be kind. My father was your typical midwest farmer, he did not speak much but would lead by example. Together they had some great success because they complimented each other so well, in life and in business.
