We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Mikoli and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joe, what do you attribute your success to?
Being in the creative field for over 15 years, I believe the most important factor in the success of my brand is my commitment to quality of the creative work I produce. My commitment to quality is something I live by for my clients. I always make sure my work yields the best results and will always do whatever it takes to get the job done well. .Always believe in yourself and your process.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As of today, I have been in the creative field for over 15 years in graphic design and photography. Starting with graphic design after graduating from Cal State University, Northridge in 2006, I’ve been part of freelance design projects for multiple clients including magazine design in the fitness industry for almost 10 years which helped my path to fitness/lifestyle photography. I have been doing photography for over 5 years now starting from scratch with taking classes, trial and error, learning from other pro photographers and more.
What sets me apart from others is I am unique. I am me, just as others are themselves. I photograph what I see. Being a photographer for over 5 years, I am proud of my creative work I have amassed over these few years filled with wonderful faces captured by my camera that turned into great opportunities with some of the clients whom I worked with. I love picking up my camera , setting up my light(s) or using natural light, and clicking away at my subject for great results.
No it wasn’t easy during these years in the creative field. I have had my fair share of ups and downs in my creative work. I overcame the challenges and difficulties with some risk taking, long days or nights and light challenges in the field of photography. Throughout my journey I have always made things a little bolder and a bit different. Along the way, I have built some great business relationships online and met some amazing people in person along the way who have helped me on my path to get me noticed more and led me to some great opportunities. As for social media, I love Instagram which allowed me to share my creative work with my audience and connect with some of them as well. Overall, It has always been a learning process and this journey has taught me lessons on how to cope with situations beyond my control. I am passionate about my creative work I am involved with even though it is very competitive in Southern California and still is today. I always strive for greatness in what I do.
Lastly, I am most proud that my work has been recognized in these past years and still ongoing. My work has been published in variety of magazines both print and online including Status Fitness, Oxygen, Strong Fitness Australia, Today Show online, Inside Fitness, Muscle & Fitness UK and more. As for future projects, I have some upcoming photoshoots and a magazine design project in the pipeline. I am a hard working creative that’s always striving to get better everyday and hope that my work moves you in some type of way. Thank you for reading and anyone who has been part of my journey. Appreciate it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Welcome!! Living in the Los Angeles area for pretty much all my life, going to the beach and hiking are essential activities for the week long trip. Also, we would go to some of favorite food places in and around town, check out some museums such as the Getty, LACMA and national parks like Joshua Tree. They are exciting places to check out as a tourist. Overall, there is a lot to experience for a week long trip in Southern California.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes Absolutely! First, I want to thank Shoutout LA for recognizing me with this interview. My success from my creative work comes from all of my clients from the past 15 years! Giving them a big shoutout to you all because without their support and shoutouts, my creative talent would have gone unnoticed. Lastly, I also want to give a personal shoutout to my family and friends for supporting me in my dreams. I am extremely thankful to them.
