We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Cheng and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joey, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk for me is a challenge but not a gamble. It depends on how much stake you know you have in hand to flip the situation around… It requires courage, knowledge, and perseverance to make it happen for yourself.

Currently in my life and career, I’ve decided to put 110% focuses on my wedding photography business instead of getting a full-time job (1. The jobs I want require 2-5 years of experience in the industry, although I have them from past experiences but to most companies I’m still a fresh grad. 2. To most companies, they won’t consider hiring me because of my visa status). So the risk and stake of my situation is: if by end of next year (2022) I won’t have a good revenue year, and I won’t be established as a successful Wedding Photographer (Or just a creator) then my visa will expire and I won’t be able to stay in US anymore. But I know that I have the talent, and I have the resources to apply for all kinds of marketing help for myself… if I don’t believe in myself nor show-up for myself, even if I get a job nobody will believe in me or showup for me as much as I’ll ever be for myself (my employer can terminate my contract by end of next year and hire a new person – worst case scenario. So my visa will still be terminated)!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art… is Photography, particularly in Wedding Photography. While in film school, I was put through photography training and I was so lucky to have met one of the best photography professor/mentor/supporter. She taught me to slow down, and be conscious about what we create. She introduced me to the idea of Vulnerability. I never understood vulnerability until I became a wedding photographer. I started to ease in to the joy and happiness of my couples, on our shoots and on their wedding day. More so now, I start feeling with them together on their wedding planning journey. I understand that overwhelming feelings from planning, so I step in and help as much as I can for them to make their wedding as easy as it should be. I wish to be there for them whenever they need someone.

With the name Teenadult Productions, and my social existence being Joeytheteenadult. Teenadult is a mentality that I live with. It means Dream ambitiously as kids, achieve our goals (and dreams) beyond our own expectations. Adulthood ends up in one big result: shaving off the edges of our personality. But we shouldn’t be just that! We should keep the good edges that push us forward, and round off the bad edges that limits ourselves. That’s what I believe in, thus whatever I do, I give in 110% of my effort. And this is exactly the creative and work atmosphere I want to bring to my lovebirds. My clients always tell me, “I’m not photogenic, I don’t know how to pose”. It’s ok, I’ll make it possible for you. I’ll always bring in that creative Teenadult mentality when we plan our shoots, to brief them up that whatever we dream of creating, it’s possible. I always encourage my lovebirds to be more daring of what they want to achieve, and I’ll come up plans for executions! Because you know why? I LOVE THESE CREATIVE CHALLENGES!

Business Wise: Teenadult Productions with our ambitious mentality and daring goals, I want to create that Apple Experience for my lovebirds. I want to be the wedding photographer who’s by your sides to help each and every process whenever you’re overwhelmed just as how Apple always provides the best solutions and customer supports to everyone! I know that planning for your wedding is not easy, thus I want to be there to support you and help you as much as you’d allow me to! Because I care about these little things. Because I love you. Because I appreciate the love you give me for letting me do what I love doing. And also because seriously, 2021 is not about competition, but more about our community!!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First, let’s go to Disneyworld in LA (not Florida because I don’t want us to get eaten by alligator). Next, we should go to NY for GREAT Italian and Chinese Food, and also some cultural visitings to museums, park, and libraries, also to participate in their SUPER FASHION PRIDE with skills. Then we are going to Tokyo cuz my best friend always wants to visit, also to enjoy the FANTASTIC UNCOMPARABLE JAPANESE CUISINE, also to look at the Tokyo Tower (we won’t go to Paris for Eiffel Tower because she’s not my romantic partner lol). Then, we’re gonna head home to Hong Kong to see my family, follow my family to all the michelin restaurants in Hong Kong, enjoy some home-cooked dinner, and participate in the smartest and wittiest family banters from relatives oh and finally teach my best friend to play mahjong! Lastly, Thailand for the sun and beach, and the good thai food. hahahha Chinese are similar to Italians… I’m all about good food and fun dining and loved ones! hahaha.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all, my folks! They believed in me and sent me off to the US from Hong Kong. But also thanks to them because now that half of my life (and my conscious years) is in the US and if I have to go home next year, I’m basically starting from ZERO in my late 20s lol! But they are my biggest supporters, they are my biggest believers; even when I doubt myself or feel like a failure, they’ll always love me, be there for me, encourage me, and help me on every levels when I can’t even help myself. Without them and their unconditional love, I honestly won’t be a confident, ambitious, and happy gal I am today. Also, thank you to my family for being the best christian models for me to know that I’m loved and I can give love – and that is the abundance within us.

Secondly, my business coach Jai Long and our Sailors Community. It’s honestly a scary road to take on becoming an entrepreneur for my own wedding photography. But Jai is always bringing motivational talks and actual business/entrepreneurship knowledge to our community. Also the virtual companionships in our Sailors Community so that I know I’m not alone.
