We had the good fortune of connecting with John Bukaty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
Yes and it has to do with the saying “People don’t change”. I see people change their behaviors all the time. I see their transformations and it’s always encouraging. As a society, we have to remember that we frequently do see rapid change over short periods of time and that is something to be recognized.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have mastered the art of live painting at Live music concerts and events. Since 2001 I have painted all over the world in many different situations. I am more naturally a jack of all trades as far as the creativity and interest as an overall artist. I have evolved within different styles in the studio from sculpture to abstract to multiple collaborations. I find solace in the process itself. I have learned to be a conduit to something that is greater than me and I find that I am more following the lead of art rather than me leading the art.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to the River and then to the Tree of Life. Then we would head out to Congo Square where I would share the story of the birth of Jazz (NOLA’s greatest past time). Then a walk through the French Quarter and end up at one of Donald Link’s restaurants (Herbsaint). A visit to Tipitina’s would be on the to do list – so that we can see one of our favorite bands!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would first like to give a shout out to Julia Cameron and The Artist Way. The Artist Way has been a playbook for me by helping me establish a daily practice. I have found that working through emotional issues with other artists has also become the best connection to my source of creativity for my art.

My second shout out is to Wayne Dyer. He has explained spirituality from a nuts-and-bolts point of view and that has given me a simplicity to happiness. “There is no destination for Happiness. Happiness is the way” (Wayne Dyer).
