We had the good fortune of connecting with Jon Kaplan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jon, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Without ever being directly told this, it became apparent early in my life through looking at those that inspired me, my father included, that the best investment you can make is in yourself. No one values your skill and work effort more than you do.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a mixer, I am essentially overseeing the last step of the recording process and, as such, am responsible for making sure the artist’s creative vision is as fully realized as possible. It is a role that takes a long time to excel at, and one that incorporates both creative and technical expertise. There were many times along the way where I had to take hard lessons to heart and head back to the drawing board to accomplish my long time goals. For me the biggest challenge was keeping my pride in check – It was a long journey for me to let ego take a backseat to new ideas. The most inspired art often comes from the freshest, most untainted source, and I have learned over time that the best use of my experience is primarily as a resource, without letting it over color the raw creativity. In the end music belongs to everyone whether you make a living at it or just like to sing along in the shower, and I try to keep that at the forefront of my process.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being a New Yorker at heart, I was skeptical of the LA food scene when I first arrived out here. But I have found that this town supports a deep culinary culture both old and new. Dig a Gold Burger in Highland Park, a Zeus Pie at Pace in Laurel Canyon, Jungle Curry with Pork at Jitlada in East Hollywood or anything at one of 1000 amazing Mexican joints. LA has a never ending list of delicious meals to try. Find a list online and go at it!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is a large community of musicians, musical mentors, business professionals and family members that have kept me going through the years. Without the constant support and perspective of this broad group of music lovers, I would most certainly not have been able to survive and thrive in this constantly evolving industry.
