We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Lauterilch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonathan, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When it comes to risk the best way to ensure you get an ROI is to only take calculated risks.
The difference between taking risks and calculated risks is with calculated risks you can map out worst-case scenario and still see yourself getting an ROI from it.
For example, if you are going to sign up for a business coaching program think about all the ways you could win through that investment regardless of whether the program “works” or not.
Could those wins come from the network of other people who are also in that program?
Could those wins come from positioning yourself better in the marketplace?
Could those wins come from building a relationship with the creator for other opportunities?
Every risk I have taken I run through this filter knowing that if I invest in myself I will always get an ROI. Whether it’s a new relationship, a new skill set, or a new way to position myself in the marketplace.
It’s been taking calculated risks when it comes to investing in myself that leads to an ROI every single time.
When you operate your life with a worst-case scenario attitude and you’re willing to do the work you’ll always find yourself walking away closer to where you want to be every single time.
What should our readers know about your business?
I have two companies that are on a mission to help Fitness Professionals and Gym Owners get paid what they’re worth.
Smart Shark focuses on client acquisition to take the guesswork out of bringing clients in from marketing, lead gen, follow up and sales. While Fit Pro Collective focuses on teaching Fit Pros how to grow their business and scale to new levels they’ve never reached before.
What’s most exciting at the moment is we have clients in over 6 different countries and our team is rapidly expanding to meet that demand. Being able to truly help great coaches all around the world get paid what they’re worth is one of the best feelings in the world.
I got into the business as I’ve been in the fitness industry for 13 years now and after working in the corporate world for a decade I started to see the gaps in the industry.
Most coaches don’t make it past 18 months and that’s if they make it to full time.
Most coaches aren’t taught essential business skills and are forced to learn the lessons the hard way.
So I decided to do something about it and make it my mission to give coaches the tools, systems and support they need to thrive.
I started Smart Shark as a side hustle while I was still running gyms 3 years ago until it grew to the point where I had to quit my job. We’ve now grown to a full team with clients all around the world.
It wasn’t easy but, you’d be amazed at what consistency and focus can do over a long period of time. I had to go through quite a few mindset evolutions over that period of time and every time my mindset grew, so did my business.
Business is 20% skill and 80% mindset when it all boils down. You can have all the tactics and strategies in the world but, if you’re suffering from stinking thinking then nothing you do will work.
Investing in a coach was one of the best decisions I ever made as it allowed me to get an outside perspective for my company and elevate my way of thinking.
As for what I would want the world to know about our brand and our story the most important thing is this.
I didn’t pick the fitness industry as a niche, we are the fitness industry.
Every member on my team has been in the fitness industry and we’re on a mission to serve our brothers and sisters in order to help them get what they’re worth.
The world needs more great fitness coaches and those coaches deserve to be compensated appropriately.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Dallas Texas so the list of things we could do is endless.
I’m definitely an experience/adventure kinda guy so here’s what we would do.
1) We’d go to a dallas mavericks game for sure.
2) We’d hit up some of the golf courses around here as they are amazing.
3) We’d hit up a few of the Mexican and sushi restaurants here as they are super authentic.
4) If they were up for it we’d do some paintball as that’s one of my favorite things to do.
There are tons of sights to see here of course we’d end up checking out.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out Break Free Academy and their Apex program.
Apex has not only changed my business but, it’s changed my life.
I joined expecting to grow my business and what ended up happening is I became a better version of myself. It’s a life-changing program for those willing to do the work.
