We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Anthony and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, what are you inspired by?
I mean sometimes I feel like I’m inspired by the most mundane of things like a silly jingle I hear in an educational video at school which will then urge me to go to the bathroom and record a voice note which will later turn into a song of mine. But the root of my inspiration comes from life experiences; my family, people I love, people I’ve lost. I write about super specific things in my life but to this point I’ve been really lucky that people relate to what I do and what I write about.

Some artists that have really influenced me and continue to inspire me on a daily basis is Ed Sheeran, Teddy Swims, Charlie Puth, Adele, Tate Macrae to name a few.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey as an artist began with me and my piano. I was always the bigger kid growing up, which was tough for me and also having a love for music and the arts made me an easy target for bullies I guess. So because of those things much of my schooling was riddled with bullying; but I never shared that with anyone as I hated sharing my feelings about it for the fear of being seen as weak.

Music became an outlet for me to express the things that I felt like I couldn’t speak about. I remember so clearly when I was 7 y/o, coming home from a hard day at school with so much emotion and anger running through me. So I sat at the piano, put pen to paper and wrote my first ever song about my experiences with the bullies. It was called “Wait” and it was about how lonely and isolated I had felt but also trying to comfort myself in saying I don’t need anyone. And from that day onwards I fell in love with the feeling of writing a song and telling a story through it.

I think that’s what sets my music apart from others, my storytelling and the way I deliver lyrics that are super specific to my experiences and situations with a hope that people connect and resonate with it. I feel most at home and at ease when I’m chilling on stage with my piano, I think that’s just because that is where it all began for me.

Since that moment I’ve written a lot of music, written a lot of bad music too but that’s all part of the process and refining my craft. I used to busk on the streets of Perth to save money to eventually record and release my first album at 12 y/o. Busking used to terrify me and a still does somewhat, I feel like its a super vulnerable thing to do in setting up on the street and singing to complete strangers but that really helped me develop a small sense of confidence and be able to do more live performances.

I continue to struggle with my confidence and belief in myself, but I think that’s something that slowly gets better as I continue to work hard and find myself as an artist. Being at a place following American Idol where I’m working with incredible industry artists and songwriters everyday has been absolutely amazing and allowed my music to get so much better in terms of its quality and artistry. Being out in LA by myself a long way from home has been really hard, but I definitely see the sacrifice paying off so that’s getting me through, and i know that my family want me to succeed and want me to be out here pursuing it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Back home in Perth is some of the most incredible beaches you will ever see, so straight away I’m taking them to the beach. We go down south to the family farm a couple times a year to relax on the beach and drive around the quad bikes which is some of my favourite memories ever back home. Me and my family also go on a trip for new years and go crabbing, fishing, boating; it’s just the best times ever – family time means a lot to me and I’m lucky to have a super tight knit family

Honestly back home is so slow compared to the fast pace of LA but I think that’s why I love it. There is some banging breakfast spots, nice places to eat. I love mini golf, bowling, the movies.

Honestly simple things but those are a couple things I love doing.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Nothing that I’ve achieved thus far in my music career would be even close to possible without my beautiful family. My parents (Sam and Adina), and my 2 little sisters (sienna and jasmine) have been my rocks throughout the highs and lows of my music journey. They’ve given so much as well as sacrificed so much for me and I can never not acknowledge how essential they’ve been for me through all the musical chaos. I lean on them when things are hard but they’re there to celebrate the wins with. I love them a lot.
