We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Fox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
I’d have to say that the single most important decision I’ve made that has contributed to my success was moving from St. Louis, MO to Los Angeles, CA. I knew at the beginning of my career that I wanted more opportunities than what was available in my hometown so I worked hard and saved my money until I could afford to move myself out to LA. I packed up my car and headed west without much of a plan besides an apartment sublet. It was scary and stressful moving to a new city knowing no one and not having a job lined up but I knew that if I wanted to follow my dreams it was what I had to do. This was one of the hardest most rewarding decisions I’ve made and I couldn’t be happier that I followed my heart.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a makeup artist and hairstylist I think it’s always very important to remember that there’s more to it than applying the makeup and styling the hair. For me, it’s more about connecting with my client and making them feel beautiful and empowered. I was bullied a lot when I was younger for my looks and so I personally learned the power of makeup and hair at a young age. I think this has helped me grow as an artist by training me to look at my clients features and help bring out the best in every one them. I’m not a cookie cutter artist who does the same look on all of my clients. I really take the time to talk to them and bring out what makes them feel confident which helps their beauty shine through.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
LA is so beautiful with so many hidden gems to show off. My top spots to bring visitors are:
Brunch- The Waffle on sunset & Openaire in Ktwon
Lunch- Tocaya Organica, Lemonade, & Mendocino Farms
Dinner- The Venice Whaler, Bossa Nova, & Granville
Bars/lounges- Mama Shelter, EP LP, & Adults Only
Activities- Eaton Canyon, Runyon Canyon & Fryman Canyon for hiking, Santa Monica & Point Dume beach, shopping on Melrose, at The Grove and in Beverly Hills, The Griffith Park Observatory, The Comedy Store, The Broad, and rooftop cinema!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to my mom. I put her through a lot growing up and through it all she’s always had my back and been supportive of me. I’m also grateful that I got her artistic genes.
