Meet Jordan Leicht | Saxophonist, Composer, Performer, Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Leicht and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Getting up early, getting quality sleep, eating relatively healthy, and getting at least a moderate amount of exercise each week. Creativity flows from a healthy happy brain, and these actions help foster a healthy and happy brain.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think jazz is one of the greatest art forms because it requires tremendous individual dedication from each player to learn the music and master their instruments, but then it also requires selflessness from each of the musicians playing for the best music to come fourth. These aren’t my original words but jazz is representative of a perfect democracy: individual expression and freedom with a high respect to the whole group. It’s possible to have freedom and also be part of something greater at the same time. That’s jazz!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to three of my favorite jazz clubs: Sam First in Los Angeles, The Grape in Ventura, and then up to Libretto in Paso Robles for some of the best wine and best jazz in the world.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents! They’ve always been super supportive of me being a professional musician, and that support has meant and still means the world to me. Next I’d like to thank Josh Nelson, one of the best jazz piano players and composers alive today, for helping me develop in the Los Angeles jazz scene. I’d also like to give a shoutout to professor and bassist Gary Pratt for his deep mentorship and the rest of the faculty of the CSUN Jazz department for creating an amazing environment for young jazz musicians.
