We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jordan, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
A huge goal of mine, professionally, is to own a large ceramic studio that is open to the public. The studio will offer a variety of classes including hand building and wheel throwing, as well as specialty workshops and visiting artist demos. The studio will also be used as a personal workspace for my own art. I believe an artist never truly ends their career, I plan on making art until my hands stop working.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most proud of the newest line of work coming out of the studio. Each piece is cast by hand and made by marbling colorful porcelain together. Every piece is completely different and the design is impossible to replicate exactly, this ensures every piece is unique. The process to get to this point took a few years of testing, trial, and error until I discovered a new technique. With this new technique I am able to apply flowing, intertwined color to my ceramic art giving each piece its unique design.
There were many challenges on my path to discovering this new technique, this was not easy. There were plenty of failed pieces before I achieved the desired effect. Failed pieces included warping, color saturation problems, color flow and direction, and as always glaze issues. Through determination and lots of testing I have finally created my own unique style.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had someone visiting from out of town, I would make sure to show them more than just the city. I would plan a small road trip making stops in Joshua Tree and Angeles National Forest with a final stop at the beach. A must for out of towners is going to Knott’s Berry Farm for the rides and food, and also the Getty museum in LA for some art and culture.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The most important shoutout is to my parents for supporting my journey becoming an artist. Knowing all too well that being an artist is not the most lucrative career path, they have always seen the joy that art brings to my life.
Also, I would like to give a shoutout to my professors at California State University Fullerton. Studying at CSUF gave me the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques unknown to me at the time, without their guidance and instruction I wouldn’t be the artist I am today.
