We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordyn Shapiro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordyn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting Just Start LA was born out of my passion for helping students overcome educational challenges and reach their full potential. I wanted to create a space where students could get personalized support, especially in areas like executive function skills—time management, organization, and prioritization—that are often overlooked but vital for success. My goal was to offer more than just tutoring; I envisioned a community hub where students, parents, and educators could come together to learn and grow.

The “Just Start” mantra is at the heart of everything we do. It’s about encouraging students to take that first step, overcoming their fears and resistance. Building this collaborative team of passionate educators has been a key part of the journey, and I’m looking forward to growing Just Start LA into a place that truly makes a difference in students’ lives.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At Just Start LA, what truly sets us apart is our commitment to nurturing the whole student. Our services go beyond enhancing academic skills; we address the entirety of your child’s development, recognizing that their success isn’t just about grades. We also know how vital parents are in their children’s educational journey, which is why we actively involve them in the process, creating a supportive learning environment at home and beyond. By focusing on both academic and personal growth, we ensure that every student receives comprehensive support tailored to their needs. This holistic approach fosters a strong, flourishing relationship between your child and the Just Start team, paving the way for their long-term success.

It definitely wasn’t easy getting to where we are today. There were so many moments when I wanted to give up or just curl into a ball. But in those difficult times, I looked within and asked myself, “What can I do better in this situation as a leader?” It’s true—no one ever said it would be easy, but they did say it would be worth it, and I’ve come to realize how true that is. Overcoming challenges meant learning how to persevere, to quiet the external and internal voices of doubt, and stay focused on what matters most. I’ve learned the value of discipline and keeping my blinders up when necessary.

Just Start has become more than just a business—it’s a platform for growth, education, and empowerment. We’re on TikTok and Instagram as well, where we post helpful content under Just Start with Jordyn Shapiro to give parents and students tips and tricks on how to improve their situation, whether it’s through academic advice or personal growth strategies. What I want the world to know about our brand is that we care deeply about every aspect of a student’s life, and we are here to support them every step of the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d want to show them the best time ever along the beautiful beaches around me! I’d start our week with a refreshing beach walk in Malibu, followed by brunch at a cute local café. After a little shopping spree at the Malibu Country Mart, we’d enjoy a picnic on the beach while watching the sunset and treat ourselves to Go Greek for dessert. The next day, we’d head to Santa Monica for another beach walk, brunch at a trendy café, and some shopping along Montana Avenue. We’d finish the day with dinner by the beach. I’d also plan a nature hike in Santa Monica, explore some local farmers’ markets for fresh produce and snacks, and maybe catch a sporting event or concert. For the remaining days, I’d take them either a little north or south of LA to explore the surrounding area. Overall, it would be the best week filled with amazing memories!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my family and friends, who have been my constant source of love and support, but especially to Heidi Soussan, my mentor and everything. I interned for Heidi throughout college, and that’s where our bond formed. She’s my point person for all things business-related and has taught me to look at the bigger picture instead of getting caught up in small details. Her words of encouragement push me through my toughest times, and she’s the best sounding board I could ever ask for. Heidi has shown me how to run an effective business and lead a team—she’s truly the biggest gift in my life.
