We had the good fortune of connecting with Jorie Tonkinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jorie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My business was started from a passion of walking the beach and collecting sea glass. My husband and I were living on our beautiful 50′ yacht in the Ventura marina harbor.

I began making wine charms from the sea glass, and giving them as gifts. My friends started to request that I make them for purchase.

Not long after, four women from our marina asked if I would like to be a part of their boutique. They were opening the shop right in our marina. I had never really thought about making my craft into a business, and found this a very exciting prospect.

Our location was right on the waterfront. It was the perfect location, with lots of foot traffic. Plus, one of the ladies was an account, another had owned several businesses, and another was a psychiatrist. How can I go wrong? I jumped at the opportunity, and so glad I did!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My jewelry was mostly made from wire wrapping. I have a very simplistic design. I like to refer to it as a frame around a piece of art. The art being a gemstone, sea glass, and what ever someone would like made into jewelry. I create in a way that accents the piece of gem that I am working with, allowing the beauty of the stone to be appreciated.

My biggest challenge was moving to Iowa. I live rural and meeting people was very difficult. I thought my jewelry designing days were over. All that was available for us in the country was dial up. This made keeping up with my website nearly impossible.

Along with making jewelry I became a beekeeper, and rescued sick cats. A journalist here thought I was interesting enough to do a story on. I donated pieces to charity, and worked hard to get my brand out there. My sea glass jewelry was readily accepted at the local Art Center, where I still sell my jewelry.

I have recently started to do metal smithing. I am definately in the crossroads of my life. I find it challenging, but so rewarding. It has sparked a whole new flame of passion.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ventura Harbor Village is a great place to enjoy shops, art, and delicious food like Andrea’s Seafood. Island Packers ships offer trips to Channel Islands National Park – perfect for nature lovers and hikers. Don’t miss biking from the harbor to Ojai for stunning views. Ventura is a hidden gem that you will always love to remember.
