We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Escobar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joseph, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It started out more as a way to escape my regular job. Doing graphic design for the business I was working with didn’t allow for much of my own creativity and so I decided to start making art that was more queer and more cheeky, something I could have fun with. People reacted well to it and I am always just naturally working and finding ways to get my art out there, so starting a business with it just came naturally.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m very proud of my art because it’s something I’ve had to fight for. Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to express myself the way I wanted. I’ve gone through so much to be where I am today and I feel most accomplished when I can let me creativity run. I’ve always been a hard worker, always passionate and committed; and if I can inspire that same sense of pride in someone else through the things I create, then I’ve already won.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Los Angeles, so there is definitely a lot to do! A week long trip, you’d definitely visit some of the best sushi spots with me around the city. We’d hit up the beaches for some sun and West Hollywood for some fun! I actually really enjoy doing tourist-y things, so I’m always up for a hike to the Hollywood sign or a stroll along Santa Monica Pier. If you’ve brought some money with you, I’m a big fan of theme parks, as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Carlos. He has been there from the beginning, I definitely owe a big Thank You to him. Our business really is a collaborative effort, he’s come in clutch with design ideas when I’ve had designer’s block.
