Meet Joseph Vasquez | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Vasquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joseph, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I’ve been navigating the ups and downs of risk since I was a kid. My free time was all about skateboarding or surfing with my dad and brother. With a passion for action sports comes the reality of risk: you either land the trick and feel an incredible rush, or you wipe out and you’re pretty bummed.
My parents had a unique way of handling these moments. Instead of rushing over to comfort me, they’d ask if I was okay and then tell me to get back up and try again. This blend of their encouragement and my own drive to keep improving has been a huge lesson for me in how to handle risk. It’s become a core part of who I am and what motivates me.
I carry this mindset into my photography career as well. Whether I’m reaching out to a new client or photographing someone I just met, I know there’s a chance I might stumble. But I also know there’s a good chance I’ll succeed and make something great happen.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My creativity really springs from the freedom I feel when riding motorcycles and skateboarding. Both action sports and the motorcycle scene are overflowing with creativity—everything from the gear we wear to the music we listen to. It all adds fuel to my creative fire. For me, the world feels like one big canvas just waiting to be explored.
In my younger years, I tried out all sorts of jobs, but nothing seemed to fit. I felt detached and unhappy with what I was doing. It became clear that my mind was always drifting towards creativity or going out for a ride. Then, while working in sales, I met a few photographers, and that was my “aha” moment. I realized that photography could be the perfect tool for me to be immersed in everything I love.
There’s freedom in the activities I enjoy, but there’s also a lot of failure and a whirlwind of emotions. It’s this constant chase for progress and all the highs and lows that come with it that really drives me. And that’s what Theory Of Shred is all about.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA is bursting with adventures that blend the excitement of city life with the tranquility of nature. Depending on what kind of thrill my friend is after, I have two perfect plans.
For a chill day, we’d kick things off with a cup of coffee from Menotti’s Coffee in Culver City. Then, we’d grab some snacks, drinks, and skateboards, and head to the Inglewood pump track. Its the ultimate spot for a picnic with plenty of trees, grass, and fun for all skill levels.
If my friend is craving something a bit more high-octane, we’d start with coffee at Motoring Coffee in LA. Then, we’d head out on motorcycles and cruise north on the PCH. The lonely canyon roads offer the perfect escape to clear your mind and soak in the present moment. We’d likely cap off the day with a delicious carne asada burrito from Tacomiendo in Culver City and a nice, cold beer.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Several individuals have been instrumental in fueling my success. First and foremost, I owe a debt of gratitude to my parents and the friends I grew up with—those who, through our shared experiences of pushing limits and challenging each other, played a crucial role in shaping my drive and determination.
I also want to acknowledge the mentors and colleagues who introduced me to the art of photography. This group, with whom I continue to collaborate, has been fundamental in my creative journey. Each member brings a distinct perspective and style, and together, we produce work that is both innovative and impactful.
Lastly, I must recognize my partner. Our shared creativity and collaborative spirit lead to a wealth of groundbreaking ideas. Their support is unwavering, whether I need constructive criticism or emotional support during challenging times. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their love and support, and the support of the people who surround me.
