We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joseph, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When it comes to risk I accept the challenge most times whether its minor or large scale. Moving from Atlanta to Los Angeles with no family for insurance, showed me that everyday you will see split second opportunities that you can only take at that moment. But will you risk it? Nervous? Too Tired? Broke? Taking risk when geared towards my career have been at times failed lessons but more so successful. While shooting for super producer TM88 of 808Mafia over a 4-5 month span in L.A., I was in multiple situations where I had to take that risk even if I felt new to the room.Taking risk is a true gamble on how much you’re willing to do for your craft and can reward 10x over if done correctly. It has taken an important place in my toolset for getting the job done as well as mentally preparing myself for any situation that could come my way.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Growing up I self taught myself a lot about art, learning photoshop and drawing a lot. When I attended Clark Atlanta University in 2011I was big on gfx design work and started doing photography. Never had a true focus on just one craft so I juggled both. Being a Jack of all Trades is my secret to business so I always have creative options. My second year I got sick in the spring and had to stop attending/drop out. Ended up getting a job at a fish warehouse to get money and attempt to go back to school. That same year I met TM88 then spent my last $200 in my account on a one way ticket to Los Angeles to go shoot for him. At that moment I was exposed to the way the industry moves. The misconceptions of how it really is made me focus even more on self and my mission. One lesson learned was that nothing is ever given. You have to make your voice and aura present. That is a responsibility for you and nobody else.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Im a little introverted lol but we would have to go to the Santa Monica Pier and vibe. Melrose and Fairfax have a fashion world that is awesome for shopping and seeing what’s new. Tokyo Town has one of the best anime scenes in LA, I go there to get all my nostalgic gear and games. Now food I would go to Bossanova, Planchas has some good Tacos ( Also the Street Vendors) But past those few things I’m mostly in the lab at home.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Would like to recognize my Mom always motivated me to stay in the arts. My brother Que Heffe kept me on my hustle and let me crash at his house when I needed to lock in and work. Also Lexus Macon over at Silver Tongue Media for allowing me to expand and create at new levels.
