We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Friedman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Drones are no longer the future. They are the present, and they are not only here to stay, but they are going to continue to be a regular part of our lives for many many different industries. In addition to video and photography they are already being used in health care, agriculture, construction, public safety, sports, security, and inspection of everything from railroads and rooftops to power lines and gas lines.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One Zero Digital Media started out as Josh Friedman Productions. I, Josh Friedman, am a musician and composer. I play trumpet, guitar and piano. I am also a videographer and photographer and entrepreneur. But, honestly I didn’t even know I was an entrepreneur until I had already started three brands/companies. I have a masters degree (and two bachelors) in Music and a background in education. Sadly, I have found that being a musician full time doesn’t bring me the lifestyle that I want (raising two boys in Southern California), but there are many lessons in music, specifically jazz that I studied, that I use every day. Jazz is the only college degree in improvisation. There’s a saying in jazz that “a wrong note is only one note away from the right one.” It has taught me to be adaptable in situations where many are uncomfortable. Music taught me that working with people is better than working alone, that sometimes being the one that showed up is better than being the best and not being present. I learned that creating art is (for me) for the enjoyment of others and through their joy I can measure my success. I feel very fortunate that videography and photography has helped me to become financially successful and I am still creating artwork every day. And, now I can afford all the musical instruments (well most of them) that I want even if I’m only gigging a couple nights a month.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Orange County, but I grew up in the midwest very much misplaced in a town called Munster, Indiana. I made it all the way to Ohio for college before coming to Southern California. I love the ocean and I love all of the beach towns from San Diego Up to Malibu! I’m also kind of a foodie and love live music and original art. I’m envisioning a gourmet taco and live music pairing along the coast with some creative margaritas and galleries! I would start by taking the train to downtown San Diego. First food stop would be in Old Town. Then bars in PB. Next day we’d check out art in La Jolla and swim at the shores, then eat in Del Mar. Next Day Oceanside. On the way up I love San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Beach galleries and tacos at La Sirena Grill, Newport Beach (chronic Tacos), Huntington Beach (Fred’s is a particular favorite), and keep hitting up awesome taco places all the way to Malibu. I’m sure some of this comes from growing up in the midwest where our idea of good Mexican food was Taco Bell and the avocados were already bad by the time they got to my house. But who doesn’t love a good taco and live music?!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to everyone that has ever referred a client to One Zero Digital Media. The company has always gained most of it’s clients from word of mouth, and without a community of people supporting the business with referrals we would not be where we are today! I have done surprisingly little traditional advertising since starting the business in 2008. I believe in networking and what I call “humaning.” Humaning is what my Dad and Grandfather taught me which is to connect to people in person (not digitally) as often as possible. To create a real human connection with the purpose of learning how you can help and support the other person. Most of the time this support isn’t related to my business, but it’s something that can help them with personally or professionally. Then, when someone needs video or photo or drone work, we get a call in gratitude for how we helped them.
