Meet Josh Rotholz: Music Producer, Drummer & DJ

We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Rotholz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Being autodidactic from a young age – taking it upon myself to be intellectually curious and soak up as much information as I can on things I’m interested in, whether it be music, history, art, politics, philosophy, economics, foreign cultures, religion, you name it. The flip side of that coin, though, is taking time off from learning and soaking up information to focus back on one’s self and apply the knowledge one has gained.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In keeping with my introverted artist disposition, especially in our current pandemic context, I’d probably keep it low-key but fun, soaking in the vibe of neighborhoods like Leimert Park, & Fairfax, checking out murals & art in Venice, going digging for records at Poo-Bah out in Pasadena, stuff like that. As for food spots, LOCOL in Watts and Grilled Fraiche on Slauson get my vote!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people to whom I am forever in debt when it comes to their support for me and their invaluable assistance in getting me to where I am today. No one is “self-made” if they’re really being honest with themselves, and I’m no exception. Like one of my favorite people in history, Dr. Cornel West, says, “I am who I am because somebody loved me.” That all starts with my parents, Steve Rotholz and Liz Davis, both of whom supported my love of music from the moment I first pursued it as a child, even when I could barely play a steady rhythm and was louder than hell banging on my drums in the middle of the day. My best friend and constant collaborator Blake Anthony also deserves a special shoutout. He and I have been friends and collaborators for 6 years now and he constantly inspires me to push myself to succeed, and to never ever give up on making our dreams a reality. After watching him grind tirelessly for 6 years his music is finally starting to get the international recognition it deserves, which is immensely gratifying to watch & be a part of.
