We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Hussainy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

Throughout my career as a graphic, web, and mobile designer, I had the chance to work with some amazing companies like USA Today, Disney, Shopify, and Adobe. It was a blast and the pay was great—but not without its drawbacks! I often found myself swamped with meetings and stuck on lengthy projects, which really made me feel out of touch with the fast-paced design world and too caught up in the corporate grind.

That’s when I decided I wanted more out of my design career. I wanted to make a meaningful impact, helping companies and business owners excel in the digital space. So, I took the leap and started my own agency, Pixelhappy.

Running Pixelhappy has been a game changer, especially with a super streamlined sign-up and service request process through Trello. It cuts through the clutter of unnecessary meetings, letting me oversee all projects personally—which is crucial for keeping our quality top-notch. Plus, this efficiency really boosts productivity. Not only can we provide awesome value to our clients, but I also get to enjoy a solid income without sacrificing my work-life balance. It’s the best of both worlds!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pixelhappy really breaks the mold when it comes to traditional design agencies. We’re all about the subscription model, where clients can access unlimited design services for a flat monthly fee. This approach is a game-changer compared to the usual per-project billing—our clients love the predictability and simplicity. We manage everything through Trello, which means we cut out unnecessary meetings and can turn projects around super quickly. This direct and efficient workflow really appeals to our clients, especially those who value their time. Plus, at Pixelhappy, I cater to a high-end market; our clients are those who recognize the value of exceptional design and see it as an investment. And the best part? I personally handle all our projects. It ensures that everything we deliver is top-notch and keeps the service experience really personal, something you often miss out on with bigger firms.

Starting my own agency wasn’t a walk in the park; I left my full-time job to chase this dream, and one key lesson I keep learning is the importance of perseverance. Facing discouragement head-on and continuing to push forward is tough but incredibly rewarding. I’m here to support businesses of all sizes to achieve their dreams using my unique design skills, empathy, and knowledge. Remember, if I can make this journey, so can you! If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles has so many great spots to check out! You definitely shouldn’t miss grabbing a burger at In-N-Out; it’s a classic. After that, head over to the west side and soak up the vibes in Santa Monica. When you’re done there, come down to Playa Del Rey where I live. We can hit up my favorite dive bar, The Prince O’ Whales. It’s the perfect way to experience the local scene!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First off, I want to give a huge shoutout to God for placing such incredible people in my life who encourage me, push me, and help me strive to be the best version of myself. I’m talking about my high school best friend Damari Butler, my ex-girlfriend who was with me for 8 years—yes, it was quite a stretch! I also can’t forget my twin brothers, Kory and Kyle Larson, and all my other close friends who have broadened my perspectives and constantly reminded me of my true potential.
