Meet Joshua Sutherland | Music Coordinator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Sutherland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I attribute a lot of my success thus far in my career to being a calculated risk taker. I’m always searching for the next opportunity that will make me a better artist, teammate, and overall human-being. A lot of people think it’s impossible to be both calculated and life on the edge and I honestly disagree. I think both can co-exist within the same person as long as they’re able to find a healthy balance. I like to live by the idea of “putting myself in danger.” Take a risk and jump, let’s see if I’ll either sink or swim.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a Music Coordinator for Home Box Office (HBO). Never in a hundred years did I think I would actually work for my dream company, at this age. It wasn’t easy getting here but I’m thankful for every job and experience I’ve had to prepare me for this position. Out of college, I wanted to work in Post Production but wasn’t quite sure which avenue I wanted to take. All I knew was I loved music, film, and television. So, I asked myself what’s a job I can do where I can fulfill all my passions, because I wasn’t ready to sacrifice either one. Throughout the pandemic I meditated a lot, prayed even more and did a lot of freelance gigs to sharpen my skills. I spent all other hours in the day cold calling/emailing people, applying to jobs, getting rejected from jobs and sending out production reels to different companies. Eventually, my prayers were answered and I woke up to an email from someone from HBO. All I knew in that moment, was I had to take full advantage of this opportunity I was granted. Literally a couple months later, I’m on a plane to Los Angeles to begin working on one of the greatest shows of my generation, Euphoria (Season 2) as a Music Coordinator.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever a friend visits me in LA, my first stop is always Smorgasburg in DTLA on Sundays. I’ll never forget my first time going. I was amazed at how many food trucks could actually be in one place and how happy everyone was to be eating in the sun. Next, I would bring them to any film festivals or music performances. In my opinion, LA has such a deep appreciation for the arts, everyone is so supportive and willing to collaborate. Lastly, I would tell everyone to visit one of California’s private beaches. LA, much like other major cities, can seem so loud and chaotic all the time. So, going to a private beach can really help you clear your mind, body and soul and actually breathe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be where I am today, without the support of my family and friends. And to be honest, at this point in my life they’re all becoming one. They’ve stayed by my side through all my ups and downs. Job employment and unemployment. All my achievements and failures. But through it all, they have been my unmoving rock, which I will never take for granted.
