We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Benperlas Kalli Quigg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maya Benperlas, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Both Kalli and myself started rescuing animals in need in our free time aside from our day jobs which both happened to be within the animal welfare world. The point where we decided to create our own nonprofit really came out of necessity for our community. We saw the vast majority of horses that were not finding homes in rescues were either old, medically complex or not rideable. We saw a huge need for permanent sanctuary for these horses with innovative high quality care and when we couldn’t find that, we decided to take our experience working in the animal welfare world and apply that to running a nonprofit animal sanctuary.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Viva Rescue is an animal rescue and sanctuary that is creating a more compassionate world through permanent, innovative, sanctuary care for equines and farm animals in need.

The Viva sanctuary is currently home to cats, chickens, horses, goats, and sheep. Many of these animals have been discarded from industries that abuse and exploit them. Many animals at the sanctuary also have special needs that make them need constant specialized care and rehabilitation.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Last time we spoke I mentioned some of the instrumental people on our board and team that make this work possible. This time i’d like to dedicate this shoutout specifically to Dr. Rosen of Shiloh Veterinary Hospital. Recently our organization has taken on some cases that need new, innovative, compassionate, and out of the box thinking. Dr. Rosen has been absolutely instrumental in these cases. It is truly a blessing to have Dr. Rosen and her hospital on our team. So many cases would be impossible without her talent and heart for these animals.
