We had the good fortune of connecting with Josiah Bruny and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Josiah, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea of Music Changing Lives by simply wanting to teach at-promise youth how to own their intellectual properties in music and art. It was an epiphany that no one believed in when I first started, but now it’s a nationwide model and we’re looked at as one of the thought leaders in our industry.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At Music Changing Lives, our mission is to offer the highest quality music and art enrichment programs paired with academic support to underprivileged and at-risk youth ages 5 and older. We work to improve their chances of achieving a positive and successful future and transform them into active and knowledgeable civic participants.

This has been a 24 year mission, the best part as a creator I’ve got to see my dreams come true. Many never experience something like this so for me I’m humbled every single day I get to wake up and live out my dreams. This was not easy I’ve gone through racism, being belittled, told my idea doesn’t make sense. Instead of giving up I went back to the drawing board several times and now thanks be to my team and every mentor around me we have a model that will be replicated across the nation.

The main lesson that I’ve learned along the way is never one believe in yourself number to get far away from naysayers because they themselves haven’t really created anything number three remember you are enough you can do anything you put your mind to stay down stay focused and never ever give up your dreams!

I would like the world to know that I am thankful for all the people that bought a CD, a water bottle, or supported our fundraisers, or just came and simply volunteered to help us turn nothing into something this was an epiphany that is now a reality for so many thanks to you and so many others Music Changing Lives will live long beyond any of us.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had the opportunity to bring my best friend here and do a weeklong itinerary. It would start at the first community center that we’ve developed in Redlands we would then after taking a tour go eat at the park Israel Beal that we got dedicated for a former slave that was freed by the emancipation proclamation and developed what is known as the Lugonia area in Redlands.

From there we would adventure all of the murals that we’ve painted across our region from basketball courts to beautiful buildings and so much more.

After that we would take a tour to see your future vision for the world and have you enjoy a day at Music Changing Lives Urban Garden where we would volunteer learning how to garden and prune plants that need to be cared for after which we would enjoy a concert in the garden like no other. While learning the meaning Farm to Table as we enjoyed a salad from our garden.

The following days we would take individuals around to our school sites and community partners sites to learn about all of urban revitalization partners that we work with in our region! Encouraging you all to sign up to learn how to replicate our national model right in your own backyard. For lunch we would enjoy Baja tacos one of my favorite local vendors.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are literally to many people to shout out for their support of our 24 year overnight success story. I cannot name them all but if you are reading this you know how you’ve played a key part in my life someway somehow and I always thank you all personally. The beautiful part about Music Changing Lives is this is a peoples movement wholeheartedly built by the people for the people to uplift all people!
