We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Hsieh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joy, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I lost my first dog while ago when I didn’t know how to do photography. Right after that I went to Art Center College of Design and majored in photography and imaging. The reason why I wanted to do photography is because a good photograph can capture the moments and make them last forever for their owner to keep. I always like to challenge myself and find that the animals and newborns are the most difficult subjects to shoot with but the outcome is always so worth it. That’s the reason why I want to do portraits for families to keep.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Right now for my work I mainly do newborns and family portraits. I only started to do newborns sessions not long but about two years ago. I found doing the newborn sessions is the most challenging and exciting thing to do when I have no clue how to handle a newborn at first start. I have no kids myself so I can only start with some of my friend’s babies as practice. School didn’t teach us how to do newborn sessions so I pretty much have to figure it all out by myself. I joined newborn session groups, went to newborn seminars…etc to improve myself. I would say, practice makes perfect. But I wouldn’t say my work is perfect because I’m still learning and growing along this path. However, I’m the one who can make myself better and I’m always looking to perfect my work and make them better to each session I did before and that’s how a person can grow. The job is not easy but I’m happy each session I was able to capture the memories to their family to keep for a lifetime and make their family happy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend is visiting I would definitely take them to Pasadena old town. It’s also close to my school- Art Center College of Design. It’s a pretty chill place to visit and most of my friends love it. Disneyland is also a must, it’s the happiest place on earth. Who can resist it? Also, some museums here and there, some sculptures and landmarks around the LA area. But I would say the weather in LA is just a bonus. Always so bright and shine. Not many other countries have this kind of weather that makes you happy everyday.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my father for all his support so that I could go to school, finished the degree and start my business without a second doubt. He always encourage me to do whatever I love to do but to remembered why I do them in the first place. Everything you do will have consequences, but once you decide to do them you have to be responsible for the decision and outcome. I thank my father not only to support me in all ways but also being a role model in my life so I can live up to him and be a responsible person not only to my work but also my life.
