We had the good fortune of connecting with Joycelyn Adeoye and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joycelyn, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
My ultimate end goal is actually not the end. I want my artistic role and business to go beyond my means. I go by the principle of “rather than think “what if”, think “next time.” I am always thinking of new ways to excel as a person and girl boss and have good faith that my dreams will come through even if it takes time. However, as I go through this journey I want to be recognized as the woman who puts a smile on people’s face with her art. I want to be recognized as the woman who has a huge platform that inspires people and helps other artists. I want to be recognized as someone who stands out. I want to be recognized as the go-to artist for celebrities, families, homes and more.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For Daretopaint, it all took off from my hometown high school. I took an art class to satisfy an elective class requirement and from there, people in my school started to reach out for my art. As a little girl, I would draw everything and was known as the student who always had artwork on the cover of her binders. It was like Daretopaint started before I even realized what it was capable of becoming. I started an Instagram page and didn’t really make it an official business but I took orders and started selling paintings. Gradually, I started to gain exposure and continued to grow as an artist. I branched out to creating a website, email and hopping on popular trends. Today, my business is at the best it has ever been.
As an artist, I can do a lot from creative thinking to actually creating something. Formally, I was most specialized in painting. I have painted on hats, clothes, shoes, grad caps and canvases. However currently, I have dipped my hand in digital art and absolutely love it. I create personal pieces and custom pieces. I make art that is put on bags, canvases, frames, pillows and more.
I am known for my personality and for my growth. I am most proud of how far I have come and what I have done. As a reversed person, I sometimes run into opportunities that I shy away from but looking back, I have really pushed myself and have done things I didn’t think I could do. What sets me apart from others is how easygoing and friendly I am as a small business owner. Although I don’t have an assistant and get flooded with orders, my priority is to always make my customers happy.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being from Maryland, I would take my bestfriend to nice brunch spots in D.C for they are known for good food. Down there we could also visit fun inspiring museums. In Maryland and Virginia we could visit cool lounges and amusement parks. Fun places like bowling, top golf, sky diving, skating, trampoline parks and more.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my little self, family, friends, and supporters. As a kid, I used to draw almost anything 24/7, eventually started painting, and never gave up. I’m thankful for my oldest sister and mom for helping me buy my first art supplies before I even had money to start a business. I’m thankful for all for supporting me, buying my art and even telling people about it. I’m thankful for those strangers who would exchange kind words with me and even those who would tell me to keep going when I fell short.
