We had the good fortune of connecting with Judy Kain and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Judy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I had been teaching commercial acting for a while and Francene Selkirk was the Casting Director I was teaching with. She really encouraged me to open my own business and teach more than just commercials. And that is how it started. I wanted a place where actors could feel safe but really get the training they needed to be able to be working actors.
I also wanted the classes to be taught by working actors. People who had fresh current information to share with the classes. And come from a place of compassion and passion for the craft
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I learned early on that I need to know who I am in this business. And especially how the industry sees me. I needed to type cast myself. This catapulted my career once I did that .. I became known for my comedic edge and that got me a ton of jobs. I look back 40 years ago was a completely different time. I had dark hair and it was curly and then I was considered ethnic I did not look Midwest. I looked Jewish. and that was just the trend then. So I changed my hair to red.. and started booking as the quirky midwest housewife. Now that is very different but it is critical that you are in tune with what trends are currently being sought after or you get left behind.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First, take them on a few wonderful hikes in the Malibu area. Charmlee or Sandstone Peak. Then hit either Malibu Sea Food. or the Reel Inn
The grove and Farmers Market are awesome for people watching, music, shopping, and even a movie.
The museums are great on Wilshire.. take you pic.
Lake Hollywood, Hollywood sign, and then a drive-thru Griffith Park.
I always look for what events are happening around LA as well.
There is so much to do.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Carolyn Barry, the late great Carolyn taught me everything I know about commercials. And Ken McMillian really shaped my theatrical training. I think students are also amazing teachers as they show you what can happen when you apply yourself and what not to do as well.
