We had the good fortune of connecting with Judy Wilkins-Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Judy, how do you think about risk?
If you had asked me this in 1995 I would probably have laughed at you. I wasn’t a risk taker then. Or so I thought, although I should have seen the clues. Switching from a job I didn’t love to one I really enjoyed and marrying a widower with two small children involved some risk taking. Perhaps these were the smaller risks that were priming me for the bigger ones to come.
When I left my country of origin that was a huge risk and it led to a lot of heartache and fear, the loss of a father and a career until I found my footing. It’s a big thing to do. Starting an entirely new life and career from scratch and I do mean scratch led to huge waves of fear and questioning until I started realizing that risk was producing some rather large results.
Then teaching at Disney World – my favorite place on earth had me on pins and needles. It’s a big ask to do something like that. They have all sorts of demands and expectations when you host an event there and it’s scary and stretches you to the max but the point is…it stretches you and grows you and I think that sums up why taking risks has been so important in my life.
Risk has taught me to stretch, travel arou nd the world, work with some of the world’s most famous people and some of the wealthiest families, create, be bold, write and grow. I get to teach at places like Disney World. It has given me far more out of life than I ever expected.
I used to think that the phrase: “Fortune favors the bold.” was silly but it’s not. If you don’t risk, you don’t expand and you can’t grow as much.
I guess this is a long winded way of saying that without risk I might still be sitting in a job I didn’t love. I wouldn’t have written a best selling book and now a second book. I wouldn’t have reached out to big and famous people and I wouldn’t have worked with executives in some of the largest companies in the world.. I wouldn’t have had dreams come true and I would not have had a chance at a bigger life.
Risk may be scary but it’s been a really good friend and it keeps teaching me how to push the boundaries and have adventures. I am so grateful to it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a systemic executive coach and systemic work and constellations trainer and facilitator. I am known for my deep and shifting executive coaching, my expertise in Emotional DNA and also Money DNA. More than anything I am known for my optimism and my apparently inexhaustible energy and joy. I don’t get tired!
I am most proud of my events at Disney World that are open to the public and that consistently produce transformation for participants and I am super proud of my best selling book Decoding Your Emotional Blueprint that is has been featured in Psychology Today, Publishers Weekly and Goodreads as must reads. and my new book The Hidden Power in Your DNA. I am also proud of showing people how even the darkest moments contain treasures and teaching them how to see them and use them.
I stopped a career in midstride to move to the US. It was a big move and when my father was killed I knew I had to make something happen fast. Learning about systemic work and constelllations set me on a career that branched out into executive coaching with this work as an integral part of the way I work. I worked very long hours and still don’t quite know what a weekend is but I love what I do. I was offered the chance to write a book and the day after the offer came through my mother was diagnosed with cancer and we began a two year cancer journey right after which she had a fall that fractured her hips in seven places which meant up and down to rehab every day. It was rough but I kept going. and I wrote that book! My daughter was a Godsend and she and I grew very close as a tag team for my mother who is still around !
The challenges were immense but my will to grow and succeed was larger. I think overcoming the challenges was a lot about believing in what was possible and being careful to always add maximum value for all my clients. I have also always believed that I owe the world thanks for a life and an adventure and I am far from done. I am working on creating large events to teach people about systemic work and constellations as powerful agent for transformation. I love Joe Dispenza’s model and size and want to be the number one female transformational agent.
I have learned that my limits are the ones that I create and that nothing is impossible. I have learned that there is always a place and a space to smile even when things are exceptionally tough and I have learned immense compassion. I have learned that no one gets to dictate my limits. I was told I would never move from the neck down again after an accident…I walk and move happily.
I want the world to know that you are not done, you are not small and you are not incapable. Transformation isn’t for the chosen few…it’s for those who choose it. My brand is non judgemental. I am consistently told that I create a safe space and make magic and that people grow in this space. As a systemic work and constelllations specialist I show you your issue in 3D and ten we transform it. I am also particularly well known for working in the space of possibility.
It’s important to me that people know that I had to start again from nothing and it was incredible! Starting over means you get to really take a look and shoot for the stars.
More than anything I want people to know that risk is a thing worth taking and that transformation is REAL. You just have to choose it..
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Although I live in Texas, I have been to LA and as I said I have a lot of energy so my best friends would need some walking shoes! We would be doing the touristy thing of celebrity tours becuase while Americans are used to this the rest of the world is either confounded or in awe and you know what…connecting with a little bit of that magic might just inspire you to go in search of your own dreams
I would pop past the Beverly Hills Farmer’s Market and then staying with the food I would take them on the food tour of LA.
In theevening I would see if they had a show on at the Hollywood Bowl
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Okay, Believe it or not Walt Disney, Disney World and magic! And absolutely my mother, father, brother and daughter.
When I was about 10 Walt passed. I remember it very clearly I was sitting in a car in a town in South Africa and the news came over the radio. I burst into tears and asked. :Who will make the magic now?” Everybody laughed and I said ” Well if no one else will, then I will!”
That has stayed with me. I grew up understanding that magic was the part of us that knows how to expand and grow at nano levels. Even though we may not be aware of it consciously, it tweaks us when we see someone succeed or push the boundaries in a way that brings tears to our eyes and reminds us of who we really are and what we are capable of achieving. Disney captured that and continues to do so depsite its ups and downs. I love to be there because it’s where the world makes sense. It captures our essence and shows it to us. The pity is that we often forget it and have toconstantly be reminded of it. We are so much bigger than the point of view we hold about oursleves and Disney gets that.
I always like to ask my clients “How did you make a little magic today?” and if you see me out and about teaching at an event, coaching or facilitating and you ask me if I have a little piece of magic with me you will see that I am never without it.
