We had the good fortune of connecting with Juliet Lyons and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Juliet, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I grew up as a musical theater nerd in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While I loved the music my ultra cool big sister was introducing me to as a kid, such as The Cure, Depeche Mode, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, I was insane about anything Andrew Lloyd Webber, and of course Les Mis, which I probably still know word-for-word by heart.
Toward the end of high school I also fell in love with opera and opted for a conservatory education at the University of Missouri – Kanas City, where I earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance with honors. Unexpectedly, within a few years of graduating, my interests had not only shifted away from classical music, but musical theater, too. I had begun songwriting, and had found a new undying passion.
The years of classical and theater training, however, very much influence my singing technique and singing style, though I have learned to adapt my voice to suit different genres. There are certain genres or styles that I’ll never sound “authentic” on, and that’s ok; you don’t have to do it all. My sweet spot vocally is ethereal styles such as cinematic and trailer vocals, vocal New Age, trance/chill, and pop-musical crossover a la Disney.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m soooo excited about my upcoming album, Breath of Gratitude, which is about one month out from release day. You can watch the album trailer here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5Yrzm5S4J0, which is the most open and revealing I have been in my musical journeys to date. Sure, I have written extremely personal songs, but I don’t share the context usually.
This entire album is a musical representation of my struggle with the rare airway disease, Idiopathic Subglottic Stenosis, which I was diagnosed with in 2019. Navigating the disease, I work through feelings of sorrow, fear, frustration, acceptance, and most powerfully, gratitude. The moment I wake up from surgery (I have had eight so far), able to breathe freely again, is such an intense moment; it’s a true Breath of Gratitude, and that’s what I’ve dedicated this album to.
It has been therapeutic, freeing, and empowering to express my feelings around this disease in my music. And my hope is that it will bring more awareness to iSGS. More awareness means more interest. More interest means more funding. More funding means more research. More research means better options for dealing with the disease. And maybe even a cure.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I LOVE LA. It’s so expensive, we all know it. But LA has so much to offer, especially if you’re in the music industry, though absolutely anyone can enjoy our beautiful sunny days, fabulous food, and cultural experiences.
Ok BFF, here’s our fun day: We’re getting up early to beat the crowds (I hate crowds more than I hate getting up early!) and we’re going to Point Dume so you can put your feet in the sand and we can get some scenic selfies. Next we’ll grab coffee and catch up at Sightglass on Sycamore, and what, you’re hungry already!? Ok, even though delicious Tartine is next door, let’s do Sqirl for brunch, it’s a favorite of mine! Do we really have to do something touristy? Ok then, next is the Broad for the Infinity Mirrors, and we’ll make sure we pass by the amazing Disney Concert Hall while we’re downtown. Still not tired??? Very well, we’re going to Castaway in Burbank for dinner with stunning views as the sun sets. Then we’ll rock out to an awesome band in a small Hollywood venue, maybe the Whisky. Tomorrow, do your own thing, we’ve driven all over this sprawling city, and I’m sleeping in after all this. 🙂
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely want to shout out to my high school musical theater teacher, Barbara Lioce. She believed in me, encouraged me, inspired me, and fostered the music inside me. I’m grateful to say that we are still in touch today, many years later.
