We had the good fortune of connecting with Junie Hoang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Junie, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
They always say to incorporate the question into the answer, so the best thing I can say is, I’m a creature of habit, so that helps me to succeed. I’ve had OCD since I was in elementary school, so as I got older, I tried to turn it into a positive trait instead of dwelling on it as a negative. I used it to make myself more organized, structured and efficient. I’m all about lists and schedules, so it helps me stay on track as the day goes along. Some people may call it being a type A personality, but it really helps me stick to my goals and accomplish short-term as well as long-term tasks. I tend to be repetitive with my routines in my personal life as well as the business side. The downside is, it can create a bit of anxiety if I get off track, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons. Success can have different meanings for each person. For me, it’s a great confidence builder if I can get my list of things-to-do checked off at the end of each day. It’s the baby steps and small achievements that snowball into bigger milestones. Overall, I like to stay busy and active, so idle time drives me a bit crazy. It works for me in getting things done, but I’m sure it drives a lot of people around me mad! So I’m usually described as extremely reliable and often times annoying, hahaha 🙂
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started off in dance, but had a bad case of directional dyslexia, so it was very hard for me. I then tried my hand at acting and found a niche for myself. I discovered a love for dancing when I was 16, but diverted to academics. I love animals, so I got my B.S. in Biomedical Science from the College of Veterinary Medicine. I spent a couple of years in the science field in school and in the workplace, but eventually ended back into the arts. I think what I’m most proud of though is not my education or my profession, but how I was with my family. I spent years caring for my grandmother and my parents before I really dedicated myself full-time to my craft, which was really difficult as all my peers passed me by. What those years taught me was to be patient. I look back on that time spent and know I did the right thing. I was able to move forward with no guilt or regret, so when the time came to live for me and do what I love to do, my mind was free. I had to keep telling myself that it wasn’t the time yet, but when it comes, it’s going to be great. I know it sounds cliche, but getting acting jobs is like icing on the cake, but the real excitement for me is to be able to say that I was there for people when they needed me the most and that makes me feel really good about myself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had to pick the time of year to have my friends come out and hang with me, I would have that align with my favorite holiday, Halloween. Every year, I do about 40 to 50 events. I literally eat, drink and sleep the spooky season, so it’s a no-brainer what we would be doing. There are so many activities to do in Los Angeles. My favorite one is Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights. I’ve been to that one 17 years in a row! I usually start on September the 1st and go straight through October 31st. No matter where I’m at during those months, I will always find Halloween stuff to do in that town. We would hit every amusement park, haunted house, and show. Everyone says I’m obsessed, but it does only come once a year, although I watch horror movies year round. It is a bit of a challenge to find friends who like to do those activities, so my friend would have to be a die-hard horror fan like myself. I think some of the most interesting people are misfits. I’m most comfortable around that group, being a little bit nerdy and awkward myself. And of course, my second favorite holiday would be Christmas. That one’s a little bit easier to find people to go with. So as you can see, right now you’ve caught me during the best quarter of the year. It’s the one time of the year where celebrating the holidays is the priority for me.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have a very small, but extremely supportive number of loved ones in my life. It’s definitely about the quality as opposed to the quantity for me. You know who you are! My significant other is the top of the list for me as well as my Nexus group. A tiny group of us started a production company when we all got started in the business and we’ve been friends and family ever since. In general, other people in the business keep me going with shared stories, which makes me feel less alone on the journey, because let’s face it, it can be a very isolated path if you’re on it by yourself. I’m also an avid reader of self-help books. I was raised Buddhist, so reading about living in the present moment really helps me when I start digging into my past mistakes and worrying about the future. I try to find little nuggets from conversations I have with everybody I come into contact with because we all have shared experiences. Big or small, everyone has something to offer to add to your database that you can pull from and hopefully vice versa. I also try to have faith in the universe and karma, that things happen for a certain reason or pan out in the way it does. It really does help me deal with the ups and downs of life and reminds me to let things unfold in its own time.
