We had the good fortune of connecting with Junior Alex and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Junior, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Hi, I am Junior Alex and I’m from the city of Compton, Ca but I now currently reside in Riverside, California. Coming from an indigenous family of eight (including me) born & raised in the heights of LA, you really get sucked into the culture at a young age. The music, food, sports, slang, etc. There’s a certain vibe in Los Angeles, a specific energy, just like anywhere else. Sports was a big part of my child-hood, I played numerous sports and for each one I always wanted to be the best I could be, I always wanted to be a star and one of those guys in the spotlight. Although I had plans to make it in every sport I tried, jiujitsu was the sport that I was most attracted to and that I honed a skill at. This art brought a distinctive divinity to my being at a young age and a sense of respect, discipline, and courage. Through jiujitsu I was taught how to overcome fear and through all of it’s teachings I try to incorporate these lessons today into my daily life and music career. My upbringing of music was very universal , sure the normal LA stuff like Pac, NWA, etc but my ears were always hearing something fresh. From rock, alternative, soul music to oldies to the east and west side of rap, to Spanish music, to reggae.. you name it. Although I wasn’t much of a fan to some of the sounds I was hearing at the time, after so much consumption through the years those sounds today became what started the arousal of my perception towards music now. I’d say I am very blessed and happy that my upbringing was universal and not one dimensional, being introduced into many different realms and ways of creative expression molded me to the man I am today and the music that I am creating now.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an independent Pop/Alternative artist. What sets me apart from any other musician is that I keep it real personal, I am very open in my music regardless of insecurities or etc. Music is a vessel for expression, whether that is creatively or emotionally sound has the ability to touch the soul. Through being open in my art I see a lot of relativity coming from others when they hear what I have to say as well. I am very excited for my first release of “2022” called “Picks My Wings” and also the introduction of my own website (https://junioralex.com) that just launched where you can have total access to all news, merchandise and upcoming projects that are coming from Junior Alex. Being where I am now wasn’t easy, it took a lot of dedication and pushing myself to stay on top of things and be consistent. Somedays I’d be tired or not feeling the energy to capture a record but I had to remember those aren’t real reasons why I shouldn’t be working, we all face this mental test inside and this internal fight going back and forth with ourselves but you have to remember what your goals are & why you are doing it. Ive learned it’s best to be yourself when innovating and creating art , lots of my older music starting out was an expression of someone else’s life, not mine. Through understanding and evolution though I now strive for originality, realism and to spread love. That is true art, genuine art, real art, powerful art. What I want the world to know about me is that I’m here to spread love and that I am more than just a categorized “musician.”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Man I honestly just moved to Riverside, California so there’s not much that I know around here but I’d say we’d go on a hike early morning at Sycamore Canyon trail, after we will get some lunch to eat because I would force my friend to fast with me until then. We would eat some bomb vegan food, there’s a placed called “Veg&Go” here in Riverside that is so good and that you guys should all try. After grubbing on a chicken sandwich that’s vegan , maybe head up to the mall and listen to some “Inner Wave” on the way up there. I would also put my friend onto other music they’ve never heard before on the way to the mall. We both like shopping so it’d be easy for us to catch a good vibe in the stores, after id probably start craving some açaí so id hit my friend up like “yo, you want some açaí?” On the way to getting some açaí from “Juju Bar” my friend would then put me onto some of their music. The açaí that I get comes with strawberries, bananas , blueberries and granola but I always add dark chocolate chips, coconut and extra honey to the bowl. Literal heaven. Eventually we’d head back to my house that is right around the corner and chill there. Maybe kick it outside in the pool or jacuzzi , chill with the five cats I have , play football, etc. Later on my mother would then cater us with some delicious vegan homemade quesadillas and rice & beans. After some gains , there isn’t a better time to start recording and working on music so that’s what the vibe would be for the end of the night.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wanna shoutout my family, who continues to support and encourage me through my music career. There’s definitely some days of frustration , confusion and not feeling good enough but with their love and guidance I am always brought back to the music in a more clarity minded space. The love from the universe is something I’m also truly grateful for as it keeps me aligned day to day to my divine purpose.
