We had the good fortune of connecting with Justen Best and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justen, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Because that’s the key to life. To find something you love and would do for free, then find out how to profit from it. Its the cheat code.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I mix, master, and record my own music in my apartment in North Hollywood. My most recent project “Prepared For The Worst, Prayin’ For The Best” is my most accomplished album. It takes a lot of frustration and time to master recording and mixing music because each song is different. You have to go through plugins and figure out how you really want to sound and I feel like I’m finally in that place. Every beat, every bar, and every song is perfect and left with no regret. Its a masterpiece from top to bottom. I’ve learned that you have to take the criticism. Go on YouTube and watch some “How-to” videos. I want people to know that I do it all on my own. I make the artwork, I upload the lyrics to Genius and Apple.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had friends to visit I would take them to a ValleySesh. It’s always great to take them to one of the many beaches near me. I love that it’s easy to go somewhere like Catalina Island which is a trip I can’t wait to make. There are many great places to eat like Mom’s Haus if we wanted to have some good Southern food. It’s amazing that you could really just drive down the street and find a new restaurant that you may have never heard of.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The love and push I get from my family and loved ones is what sparks the fire in me. Every time I make a trip back home I get recharged. I always come back to LA with a bunch of gigs whether it be music, acting, or modeling. Going home to see my people has always been something that reminds me why I made the leap I did. It’s now been a year since I’ve moved to LA and even with all the motivation around you, it’s very easy to also get discouraged. Especially for me if I feel like I haven’t done “anything” in 2-3 weeks I feel stuck. You just have to continue the course and sharpen your sword. My sword is a microphone. Family and and the people you love is all that matters.
