Meet Justin Hurtt | Wardrobe Stylist & Creative Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Hurtt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Yeah, for sure. One habit that I believe helped me get to this point was just being consistent. Being an athlete all my life, it helped me build the discipline to do the consistent actions needed to move forward in my journey of business. I believe nothing in life comes by chance, it’s all about taking action on a consistent basis. Another habit I have is always looking to see how I can add value first when building relationships. I believe if you show someone that you are looking to provide value first and not looking for things in return, it’s easier to connect and move forward with a working relationship. And lastly, setting goals is a big thing for me. This has always kept me on track and reminds me of what I’m striving for.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a wardrobe stylist and creative consultant for athletes, music artists and entertainers, but it’s much more than that for me. I really love the art of fashion from curating looks, to thrifting, to learning about the history of different brands and garments. I’m also a former college athlete and I played professional basketball for 9 years. During my playing career, I lived in 10 different countries but living in Italy for 2 year is really where my love for fashion grew even more. Not only do I think living in Europe for 9 years sets me apart, but my athletic background and the challenges that sports brought. I’m able to pull from those different experiences and relate to my clients on a different level.
My journey as a stylist began as an assistant under a good friend of mine here in LA in 2019. I was still playing basketball professionally at the time so it was only in the off-season. This gave me a chance to learn the styling business and also work with a lot of music artists and entertainers. Before that, I’d never considered being a stylist for a living, but this experience opened my eyes to the possibility and I knew it was something that I was interested in pursuing. But since I was still playing basketball professionally, it made it challenging to pursue it the way I would have liked to. It wasn’t until 2023 that I was able to get some traction and really be able to take my styling business serious. But I know that everything happened in God’s timing and I am super grateful for that.
One memorable moment in my career so far is being able to style two of my NBA clients, Shaq Harrison and Scotty Pippen Jr, during the Lakers playoff run here in 2023. During this time, we had multiple looks that were featured on blogs such as GQ Sports, LeagueFits, ProTrending, etc. It was a great experience but definitely challenging. I learned a lot and it helped me grow as a stylist. Another moment in my journey that I am really proud of is having the opportunity to travel to Paris and style one of my clients for Paris Fashion Week this year.
It’s been so many lessons learned along my journey. But one that really stands out for me is being persistent in pursuing your dreams. In this life, nothing is going to be just given to you, and there are going to be obstacles. I believe it’s really important to network and let people know what you are doing so that you are able to get your work out into the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some food spots that I really like here in LA are Met Her at a Bar, Berri’s Pizza, Sushi Stop, Pink Taco, and Monty’s Burgers. For some good food along with some good nighttime vibes, I would say go to somewhere like Tao, Beauty & Essex, Delilah, Ysabel, or Nice Guy. LA has great weather and some nice rooftops, so I would suggest a rooftop bar area like Broken Shaker, the Perch, or EP & LP.
Fashion is significant for me, so I would definitely hit up some thrift stores and second-hand shops like 2nd Street and Wasteland. Also, do some other shopping at some of my favorite stores like H Lorenzo, Maxfield, and Dover Street Market. As for other activities, gotta visit a museum like the Broad, catch a Lakers game, and would spend a day at an amusement park like Six Flags or Universal Studios.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I have to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I know I wouldn’t be in the position that I’m in or have the opportunities I’ve had without Him. Second, I have to shout out my wife. She is my support system and my biggest fan in everything that I have pursued. I wouldn’t be able to do this without her. Next, I have to shout out my parents. They always gave me the confidence to know I could do anything that I set my mind to. They believed in what I could accomplish even when I didn’t believe it myself. I am very thankful to them for that. Lastly, I have to shoutout all my friends and family that have supported and been there for me throughout my journey. It’s too many to even name, but you know who you are, thank you!
