We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Hustle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I come from an entrepreneurial family tree. My dad has been in sporting goods manufacturing my whole life and when I was younger, I used to have him order me Nike & Starter products from his accounts for me to sell at school to my friends.
When I was working at a local clothing store, I started designing t-shirt graphics for our in-house brand. When I realized that my designs were selling as well as some of the popular clothing lines we carried I started to formulate a way to make my own brand.
From there, Another Enemy was born. It started as a small side project and grew pretty quickly into a full time job, and it’s been an amazing, hectic ride ever since!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is split into two different areas, I am a photographer and a designer.
As a photographer, I have shot content for Nike, Beats by Dre, Microsoft, Aspen Dental, Hypebeast and Footlocker, to name a few. I have had my work on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art and self published photo zines.
As a designer, I have created products that Rihanna, Jay Z, Chris Brown, Miley Cyrus, Tim Duncan, LeBron James, Drake, Lil Wayne and more have worn. I have been the creative director for a major publication’s inaugural capsule collection and supervised collaborations with A list talent.
My work has been featured on E!, USA Today, ESPN, Complex, Hypebeast, Format Mag, Vice, Highsnobiety, Mtv, The History Channel, BET, NBC, Fox, Cool Hunting, Nice Kicks, Sneaker News, Daily Drop, The Hundreds Feed, TMZ, Perez Hilton, Jezebel, Deadspin, Yahoo Sports.
Nothing worth doing is easy. The universe can tell when you are not fully putting yourself into your calling. I’ve learned the hard way that effort matches outcome.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When I’m back home in Cleveland and need to eat, I visit my friends at their restaurants: Flour Restaurant, Cent’s Pizza, Ninja City, Larder and The Fairmount.
Nothing beats live music and The Grog Shop gets tons of awesome shows. If they were visiting during the 5 months of warm weather we get in Cleveland, we’d also go to a concert at Blossom Music Center. It’s the summer home the Cleveland Orchestra and also a great place to see any other live music (highly recommend Dead & Company)
Cleveland has some of the best art museums around: Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Natural History Museum, and Transformer Station. Plus tons of local artists having shows all the time at various spaces.
I love being outdoors and Northeast Ohio’s park systems are amazing. Hikes at any of the Cleveland Metroparks or the Cuyahoga Valley National Park are a must.
I have a vinyl addiction, so I hit up Record Den to score new music all the time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve learned so much throughout my life just by watching. Seeing people handle success or defeat will help you figure out how to manage your own inevitable mistakes.
There’s been a lot of important people that deserve some credit: My wife, Sarah. My family. My best friend, Banzai, my dog.
Can’t forget about the squad: Lots of people come and go, but for the most part these people have been around for as long as I can remember: Jackie, Clint, Destanie, Brandon, Kylan, Dorian, and Corey.
I wasn’t going to bring Another Enemy back and two friends of mine, Frank Cooker and Joe Freshgoods helped me see the path.
I like to think everyone should have a go to album or two for inspiration when you’re stuck, and mine are, Teebs – E s t a r a & Jay Z – American Gangster (fun fact, this was stuck in the cd player of one of my cars for two years!)
I read a lot of nonfiction – things that both inform and inspire me. Most recently, I’ve read: I Know You Think You Know It All: Advice and Observations For You to Stand Apart in Public and Online by Chris Black, 300 Arguments by Sarah Manguso, and Rumi’s little book of life.
