We had the good fortune of connecting with Kacey McClain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kacey, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I was in college, and feeling a complete burnout from my studies of science and animal medicine, it was Voice 101 where I found inspiration. My vocal professor, Cynthia Vaughn, really motivated me to take singing more seriously. I had been doing things I was told to, but not that I was enjoying, or that I felt gave me purpose. Singing gave me something to look forward to; something that I was really passionate about. It was shortly after I started work with Cynthia, that I began songwriting. The ability to write and communicate through music afforded me a channel of self expression to which I had not yet been exposed, and I was immediately hooked. I had found a way to communicate and share my own voice, both literal and figurative, and that was when I knew I needed to do this for a career.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Growing up as a Southern Baptist in Greenville, TX, I was exposed both to the love but also toxicity that comes with living in a religious community. Having been hospitalized, isolated and quarantined due to a life-threatening C. Diff infection, I became an advocate for the destigmatization of illness, eating disorders, and the holistic way in which living with them affects everyday lifestyle. Thus in my music, I seek to aid listeners in overcoming their own struggles to find their own voices. I want people to be able to discover their own internal passion through my music, and feel empowered to strive for their dreams, all while having fun. As I mentioned earlier, music did not enter my life naturally. I was supposed to be a veterinarian! However, after persistent work both on my own voice, and lots of soul searching, I was able to overcome both physical and mental blocks and create music that is authentic to me – and hopefully resonates with others as well. It certainly has not been easy, but has been an extremely rewarding experience. My advice is to keep your eye on the prize and not give up on something you’re passionate about.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many fun options in LA! I would definitely start with Priscilla’s Coffee Shop in Toluca Lake, then head over to Universal Studios and City Walk for a fun afternoon. I’d then go back to my neighborhood, Playa Del Rey, and head to Playa Del Rey beach to catch the sunset. For dinner, I’d head to Tatsu Ramen and then go to Salt & Straw for dessert! That night, we would then head to a live music venue such as at the Viper Room or Hotel Cafe to hear some of the amazing up and coming talent here in LA.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this Shoutout to my vocal teacher Cynthia Vaughn. She inspired me to discover my voice and harness my abilities as a singer and songwriter to share my message, one of self love and being unapologetically you, with the world. If it weren’t for her, I don’t know if I would have ever found an avenue in which I could communicate so honestly and expressively.
