We had the good fortune of connecting with Kahlil Greene and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kahlil, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is that I always produce the content that I want to see. While it can be useful to think about–and in some ways cater–to an audience, if you aren’t producing the content that you love then you won’t feel as fulfilled when it’s created. But when you do, you’ll want to read, watch, and look back on your own work and create more.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make educational TikTok’s about the history, culture, and politics of marginalized groups. On social media, I am known as the “Gen-Z Historian” for this work. I started back in January and tried to differentiate myself by always including reliable sources and being succinct and critical with my arguments and storytelling. the most time-consuming part of my work is always the research stage because I try to be as thorough as possible, but I hope to overcome this by hiring research assistants.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In the city of New York, my favorite spots definitely include restaurants. Specifically, Amy Ruths, which is in my Dad’s hometown of Harlem. It’s a soul food spot with the best Chicken and Waffles and Mac & Cheese that I’ve ever had. I would also probably try to take to karaoke night where I’d perform “Baby got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and all of the support and mentorship they gave me as a youth!
