We had the good fortune of connecting with Quynh Le and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Quynh, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Passion drives the success of our music school, Moonlight Music Academy. Passion created a successful brand, that our customers believed in. Like most children, I started taking piano lessons at age 4. I took a risk to pursue music after high school at an elite music conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music. Many people thought I was crazy. By taking those risks, cultivated a passion and drive that created a successful music school and business I own today. The passion that I had to create Moonlight Music Academy, runs deep, as I experienced every aspect of my business and brand. From being a 4 year old learning Do Re Mi in a Mommy & Me class, to working the front office of multiple music schools in college, and later learning the academic and pedagogy side of music education. Every aspect of what our students, parents, and staff go through everyday learning & working at our music school, I can understand and empathize with.

Our customers, who are young children, hopeful parents, and driven aspiring adult musicians, can understand and relate to the passion in our work at Moonlight Music Academy. We started as a small music school with 50 students and 4 teachers, to now having hundreds of students and increasing our teaching staff every month, the proof is in the pudding. During the pandemic last year, many music studios and schools closed around us. We were amazed to see how many students stayed with us and transitioned to online music lessons. The students and parents believed in what we were doing and not only were our loyal customers and but our dear friends. We were able to continue to provide jobs to elite professional musicians that became amazing music teachers and mentors to our young students.

The success of Moonlight Music Academy after a unpredictable year, created a community and family between our staff and students. Young students looked to their music teachers and our school, as a place of comfort and solace, not knowing what was going on in the real world. We supported each other and created a relationship of trust between business and customer. The value of our success is much more than how fast we can hit six figures, but providing the same gift of music to each person at our school. That success is much more powerful.

What should our readers know about your business?
Moonlight Music Academy is a music school that we created. Our dear friend and fellow musician, George Ko, helped us design our logo and website and brought our vision to life. What we wanted to do differently as a music school, is to break away from the stigmas that are tied to it. For example, most young students would dread coming to their piano or violin lesson. They hated their teachers and would cry during lessons. Many students quit quickly because of the quality of lesson they were getting. We wanted to make a conscious effort that we were not creating a negative relationship with music. Building a strong foundation and bonding relationship between our teachers and students is what sets us apart. Not every amazing professional musician, can be a teacher, so we set out to hire teachers that not only loved music, but the students they would be teaching. Whether it be a 4 year old student, new to music, to an adult student newly retired and wanting to learn a new skill they never had time for, our teachers are able to adapt and teach any type of student.

Practicing your flute, violin or piano will never be as action packed as playing in your varsity basketball game. Our teachers are able to provide a fun and safe learning environment, which inspires our students to pick up their instrument and practice on their own. They bond with their students and can relate to them. The bond drives our business and keeps our customers happy and has created amazing success we have today.

Finding the right teachers and staff wasn’t always easy. There was a lot of trial and error. We learned to be patient but particular with who we hired. Not many music professors can teach a 4 year old student. We know just because they had a glowing resume didn’t always mean they would be the right fit for our students. Understanding the personality of our parents and students, we were able to understand their needs and pair them with a teacher with a similar personality. It created better matches and longevity in our business.

We want to share our message as a school. Moonlight is a music academy that fosters the community to love, to explore, and to play music at an artistic level. We believe that learning music should be an inspiring, supportive, and rewarding experience. By providing people with the tools for music creation, we want to support music making for many generations.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Moonlight Music Academy is based in Brea, CA, basically North Orange County. I would take my friends to our school first, of course! We’d see a concert at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, in OC, they have an amazing production of the Nutcracker during the holidays. For food, I’d take them to Little Saigon in Westminister, CA, where they have the best Vietnamese Food, from James Beard Winning pho to crazy fun night market street food at the Asian Garden Mall. I grew up going down to OC and visiting the local restaurants in Little Saigon as a kid. You’ll get the best banh mi, korean bbq and tacos all within a 1 mile radius of each other. Lastly, the best thing to do in Orange County is to visit Disneyland, the happiest place on earth!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a special shout out to my sister, Lam Le, my business partner and Co-Owner of Moonlight Music Academy. She takes care of our day to day and business operations. She is part of the reason why I was able to take that risk after college and start Moonlight Music Academy. She too took a risk, quitting a stable job at a University to open this school with me. I’d like to give another special shoutout to my family, friends and mentors that have helped us bring this dream and business to life.
