We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaishui Liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaishui, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursue a career in the arts because the camera serves as my medium to explore the world and express my curiosity. My inquisitive nature drives me to be sensitive to the beauty and depth of the moments around me.

This curiosity and sensitivity, upon becoming a photographer, transformed into a strong desire for visual expression. I seek to convey my unique perceptions of people and things through still and moving images. Photography is not merely a technical means of recording for me; it is a way to articulate personal emotions and inner worlds.

As a creator, I integrate my emotions, thoughts, and perspectives into my work, crafting art that resonates with others. This unleashing of creativity is not just an expression of my inner world but also a pathway to establishing profound emotional connections with the audience. I enjoy contemplating and exploring the depth of life, using art to communicate these reflections, and allowing viewers to experience the world as I have.

In essence, a career in the arts is my way of engaging in deep reflections on life and expressing a unique perspective. This pursuit brings me a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction, motivating me to continuously explore and create.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Indeed, when I first stepped into the world of photography, I was enthusiastic about expressing content that “sets me apart from others,” with the goal of crafting a unique and adventurous photographic style. However, over the recent years of delving into medium format cameras, the desire for my work to be “distinctive” has diminished, possibly as a result of personal growth. Presently, my focus lies in refining my perspective and exploring the subtleties of capturing exceptional portrait or landscape shots. The challenge of infusing profound human depth and contemplation into a static image is significant for me. I am on an ongoing journey of growth as I navigate through this creative endeavor.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Currently, I work and reside in East London. If friends come to visit, I would certainly invite them to join me on the small lawn located in Bethnal Green. On a sunny day, it undoubtedly becomes a delightful afternoon. We could buy some snacks, sit on the grass, enjoy the scenery, and observe the people around. There might be children running and playing, parents waiting, teenagers kicking a football, or couples on a potential date. Most importantly, every few minutes, an overground train would pass by. Those on the train might be heading home, to work, or to places they’ve never been before.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mother, the embodiment of maternal affection; she is truly the most remarkable example of unconditional love. Her name is Suping, and her most poignant regret revolves around abandoning her dream of attending university, despite her outstanding academic achievements, due to the financial constraints of our family.

Suping not only bestowed upon me the gift of life but also instilled in me the courage to seek and appreciate “the brilliance of life’s fireworks”. She granted me the possibility of navigating the artistic path with a fearless and daring spirit.
