We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalah Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kalah, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in conservative, suburban Mississippi. When I look back, I realize I grew up in a bubble. I was naive to not only the struggles going on in my own home – like my mom doing everything she could to make life comfortable despite financial burdens that I had no idea of – to the struggles of my community beyond my bubble.
A turning point for me was when I went off to college about two hours from home. After being exposed to various ideals, ethos, people, and cultures, I realized that the world was huge, scary, but full of possibilities. That’s when I realized that I had to escape that bubble and explore the world for myself. Later, I realized that self exploration was pivotal for self love.
Now, I’m living one of my greatest dreams – living in LA and traveling the world, documenting my journey of self preservation.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Writing was my first love. I was an only child, so I grew up in my own head. Writing was a release because I could get my thoughts, fears, aspirations, and opinions out of my head and onto paper. Writing and reading, forming an imagination, understanding concepts and ideals beyond my every day experience and what was on televison, really sparked my love for storytelling.
I call myself a storyteller because I use words, photos, and videos to connect with people, especially those with similar shared experiences as me. I’m blessed to have been able to turn this into a career as a digital strategist and content creator. While I still work full time in the corporate world as a social media strategist, I am able to apply the same skills and passions on and off the clock. Seriously, what a blessing.
The root of all the work that I produce is a direct output of the internal work that I have done. Self discovery was key and I had to figure out who I was before I could show up and communicate that to the world. Many people don’t know who they are, and I hope to encourage people to explore themselves and be rooted in self.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite thing about Los Angeles is that you can jump over to any neighborhood or drive an hour outside the city in any direction, and find a different vibe.
I love heading over to West Hollywood for tacos at Tacos Tu Madre, a day party at the Mondrian, or evening drinks at Mama Shelter and E.P. L.P.
Silverlake and Echo Park have the cutest, most LA scenery with palm trees and hills all around. Plus I love the food and juices at Lady Bryd Cafe. There’s also a great flee market on Saturdays there.
When I’m feeling bougie and luxurious, I like a nice brunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Of course you HAVE to order an UberXL so you can pull up in a Mercedes. Honestly, it’s a whole luxury experience.
Downtown is my go to for rooftop hotel restaurants like Perch, Broken Shaker, and The Pilot. Clearly I love to eat, drink, and be merry. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When anyone asks about my journey to living intentionally, I reference the book that changed my life, “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” by Deepak Chopra. The first law – The Law of Pure Potentiality – really blew my mind. It teaches you to be able to distinguish between Self and Ego, and lends advice on how to stay grounded in self like spending time in nature and meditation. I still reference that book regularly.
