We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamil Ghaouti and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kamil, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I was fortunate enough to start making music and falling in love with it at age 15 when I was still in high school out of pure passion and an obsession to sound as good as my favorite artists at the time so by the time I went to uni three years later, I already had somewhat of a career start with releases on decent record labels and a few nice DJ supports without feeling the pressure of adult responsibilities. I believe that if I had started in my 20s or later, I would have felt a lot more pressure because of the need to make a living and probably would have decided to make music a hobby instead of my occupation.
Ultimately, I pursued an artistic career because passion and timing allowed me to get to a certain skill level and accomplishments earlier on in life, giving me the confidence and delusion to do it full-time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make dance music that I consider pretty mainstream which basically anyone could listen to and enjoy pretty much everywhere, from the radio to the beach to the car late at night. I’m particularly proud of my discography up to now, every song I’ve ever released means something different to me and it makes me very happy when I see how many records I put out already and how many of my dream labels I’ve been able to work with throughout the years, especially when I think I’m only 25 and got my whole life ahead to keep doing that. I’m nowhere near where I’d like to be professionally which I’m real excited to keep working towards but I’d say I got to where I am today through curiosity and commitment, as cliché as it may sound. Music is my passion, that’s what turns me into a geek and probably the only thing I can do for this long without ever getting tired so I wouldn’t say it was necessarily hard but it for sure isn’t easy to always keep going no matter the amount of rejection and frustration this career comes with. I overcame the challenges by just knowing I didn’t really have another option cause what else would I do with my life if not this? I just took some time off and did something else to clear my mind when needed and came back every time I felt like I was ready to go again. I started producing at 15 years old so I feel like I learned so many lessons since that I wouldn’t be able to pinpoint just a few, though I can confidently say it made me a lot calmer, more equipped to handle pressure and frustration in my life in general, and it helped me build so much confidence in myself and my ability to do things I never thought were possible or attainable. I wouldn’t be the man I am today if I did something else and if I hadn’t started at such a young age.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I did this countless times with so many people who came to visit so I kinda already have the whole itinerary in mind to be fair. We’d do a Malibu beach day for sure, probably hit Nobu or the McDonald’s right in front depending on how good of a month it is, go to Point Dume for sunset. A Hollywood/Griffith day to check out the Walk of Fame and Hollywood sign and maybe go for a Runyon Canyon hike. A Santa Monica/Venice day to see the pier, the Venice canals and go eat at one of the nice restaurants around. Apart from that, gotta go to the Westwood Village for old times sake, probably eat at Kazu Nori over there, check out Bel Air and Beverly Hills on the way, drive around Rodeo Drive and by the nice houses nearby. A personal favorite of mine when it comes to food is Chili’s for some reason, so we’d probably go to the one in Encino and then check out the Valley at the same time. Overall, I love driving up the PCH and Mulholland Drive so we’d be doing a lot of that just for vibes and maybe go spend a day in Orange County if we still have some time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Massive shoutout to my mom who’s been the strongest support system I could have ever imagined having by my side, I believe that having parents who have your back no matter how crazy your ambitions are is one of the main factors of success, at least I know the journey would have been a lot harder if she wasn’t okay with my decision to pursue a career in music. There’s of course so many other people who deserve credit for sticking around through early and tougher times, for example my boys who spent sleepless nights watching me send emails and bigger DJs who signed and supported my work before I had any kind of success.
