Meet Kandice Gonzalez | Actress

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kandice Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kandice, why did you pursue a creative career?
My journey into the world of artistic expression was nurtured by the entrepreneurial spirit of my parents, who owned restaurants in my hometown of Del Rio, TX, and across the border, in Del Rio’s neighboring town of Acuna, Mexico. From the moment I was born, I was immersed in a cross-cultural environment, where hard work, resilience, and the power of community were foundational. Being in the middle of all the hustle and bustle of the businesses, I also found myself drawn to the captivating storytelling that was a part of my upbringing.
Some of my fondest memories revolve around moments of creativity and performance shared with my family. Whether entertaining relatives during holiday gatherings or collaborating with my cousins to recreate our favorite TV shows through homemade videos, I’ve always been drawn to the magic of storytelling and the thrill of bringing characters to life. The stories passed down from my mother and grandmother further fueled my imagination. Listening to their tales of resilience, triumph, and love, I discovered the profound impact that storytelling can have on both the teller and the listener.
You know, it’s funny, but it wasn’t until I landed the lead role of Annie in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ during my freshman year of high school that I truly understood the transformative power of performance and realized how much I really loved acting. Stepping onto that stage, I just felt this incredible sense of fulfillment and purpose. Suddenly everything clicked, and I knew that acting was my true calling. It’s like it was always there, but it took that moment for it to become crystal clear to me. Up until this moment in my life, I was on a path to run track and cross country in college. I believe I ran for one more year until I finally traded my running shoes for the spotlight. And I never looked back.
Every role I take is a chance to walk in someone else’s shoes, and to challenge both myself and my audience to see the world through a different lens. In pursuing an artistic career, I’ve discovered the power of authenticity, vulnerability, and empathy. Through my career as an actress, my goal is not only to entertain but also to inspire, provoke thought, and spark meaningful conversations.
As an actress and fellow artist here in Los Angeles, I bring with me the wisdom of my upbringing and a strong desire to inspire others, particularly those from small towns like mine and those within the Mexican community, to pursue their dreams without fear and reach for the stars. I aim to be a source of encouragement and a role model, proving that no dream is too big for those with the courage to chase their passions.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is deeply rooted in my personal journey and the diverse influences that have shaped me. As an artist, I always look to bring a fresh perspective and authentic voice to my work. What sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity that resonates with audiences on a profound level.
Growing up in a cross cultural environment, with roots embedded in both my Mexican heritage and small-town American upbringing, has given me a unique lens through which I view the world. This diversity of experience not only shapes my approach to storytelling but also fuels my passion for representing underrepresented voices on screen.
I’m most proud of my ability to bring depth and humanity to the characters I portray, allowing viewers to connect with the emotions and experiences I bring to the screen.
I’ve faced many challenges, including the passing of both my parents—my dad and, more recently, my mom in December of 2023. Despite these obstacles, I’ve persevered, drawing strength from my upbringing and the lessons instilled in me by my parents.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along the way is the power of resilience and adaptability. In an industry as competitive and ever changing as entertainment, the ability to pivot and grow is essential.
Through it all, I’ve remained focused on using my platform to uplift and inspire others, particularly young people from similar backgrounds who may be facing their own obstacles.
On a more personal note, I’m always eager to connect with others. Whether it’s discussing our favorite films, sharing stories from our respective journeys, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee together, I believe that meaningful connections are at the heart of what we do as artists. So, if there’s anything you’d like to know about me or if you have any questions, feel free to reach out!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Foodies unite!
For an unforgettable week with my best friend, we’d embark on a culinary adventure through some of LA’s hidden gems. We’d start our mornings at Porto’s for their irresistible breakfast menu or even their infamous plata de pollo and churro croissants. Without a doubt this would be followed by a caffeine fix at Zweet Cafe in Eagle Rock at some point in the day. I’m currently obsessed with their extra hot, half sweet Spanish latte.
No trip would be complete without indulging in sunrise fries from The Great White Hut or savoring LaSorted’s Pizza’s prosciutto focaccia sandwich and zucs in Silverlake. We’d satisfy our Thai cravings at Hollywood Thai, then head to Homestate for a taste of home and Tex Mex heaven!
Of course, we’d venture into the sushi scene, on a quest to find the crispiest spicy tuna rice. And for dessert? Shaved ice, boba, and soufflé pancakes await in Koreatown, along with the Nutter Butter at Kettle Glazed in Hollywood. For a cozy dinner, you’d probably find us at Donna’s in Echo Park or the Great Greek in Sherman Oaks.
Between bites, we’d explore the vibrant neighborhoods of Silverlake, Malibu, Koreatown, and Larchmont, perhaps stumbling upon a unique find at a Hollywood Hills estate sale.
We’d take in the natural beauty of LA with hikes along the Harper Monkey Trail or Crescenta View Trail, and find our zen at Sweat Yoga in Little Tokyo or Kinship Yoga in Highland Park.
And what’s a trip to LA without some laughter? We’d catch an improv show at UCB, where I currently train for improv.
And…. speaking of training, we would absolutely have to stop by and say hi to my incredible acting coach Deborah Lemen at Deborah Lemen Studio in Los Feliz.
There is always something to do in LA and I love finding unique spots all over the city. You never know where you’ll catch me!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Big shoutout to Emilie Newell, the talented filmmaker and director of my latest project, FAWN. This film is currently in post production.
