Hi Karen, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The biggest reason behind the success of Ofelia City East is the amazing support from our customers. I started this brand with a love for creating handmade accessories that are both cute and practical, and it means so much to see people enjoying and using them in their everyday lives. Knowing that customers appreciate the time and care that goes into each item has helped me continue growing the business.

A lot of our growth has come from word of mouth. Customers share their bags with friends and family, post about them, and tell others how much they love them. That kind of support is something I’m so grateful for because it has helped Ofelia City East reach new customers without a lot of advertising. Seeing people recommend my products and come back for more has been the best sign that the brand is making a positive impact.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I want people to know that building an online business was definitely not easy. As a small business owner, one of the biggest challenges is finding the time and dedication to keep everything going. There were many moments when I felt overwhelmed, especially while raising two kids and trying to balance family life with running my business. It takes a lot of hard work, patience, and late nights.

What keeps me going is how rewarding it feels. Every time I sit down at my sewing machine and create something, I feel proud of what I’m building. Seeing my customers happy and hearing how much they love their bags makes all the hard work worth it. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to keep going, even when things feel challenging. Progress may be slow at times, but if you stay consistent and believe in what you’re doing, it’s worth it. I’m proud that Ofelia City East is built with love, dedication, and a genuine passion for creating handmade accessories that people enjoy using every day.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friends were visiting for a week, I’d keep things pretty chill but fun, with a mix of beach days, good food, and local spots.

We’d definitely spend time at The Bottle in Hermosa Beach for that laid-back beach vibe, good drinks, and just hanging out by the ocean. I’d also take them to Terranea Resort because the views there are beautiful—you can walk the trails, watch the sunset, and just enjoy a peaceful beach day.

During the week, we’d probably explore other nearby beach spots like Manhattan Beach Pier for a walk, grab coffee from local cafés, and do some casual shopping or just relax by the water. At night, it would be more simple—good food, laughs, and places with a cozy vibe rather than anything too fancy. The whole idea would be enjoying the ocean, good company, and showing them the relaxed Southern California lifestyle.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my followers, friends, and family. Their support has meant everything to me throughout this journey with Ofelia City East. From the very beginning, they believed in my handmade accessories, encouraged me when things felt challenging, and helped spread the word about my brand.

Their kindness, encouragement, and support have helped my small business grow more than I ever imagined, and I’m so grateful for every person who has been part of this journey.
