We had the good fortune of connecting with Kari Caden and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kari, how do you think about risk?
Well we all know the old adage “no risk, no reward”. My sisters and I have always believed that in order to create our vision there would always be a pretty big risk. I think there’s something so innately scary about risk taking, it keeps you up at night, it makes your heart pound faster, it pushes your limits on creativity and i think all entrepreneurs have that need to feel that excitement. We have lived off of one quote since we started in 2008, it’s on our matching paperweights in the office, it reads: “What would you do if you knew you could not fail”. That, in a nutshell is the only north star you should follow because it takes away a little bit of fear when you think in positive certainties.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I think what really sets us apart from other companies is that we are solution based products. We really have had the goal of making life a little easier and more comfortable for both pregnant women, new moms and women all over. Our companies (both Belly Bandit and Proof) were both founded based of voids in the market. In 2008 we rallied around our middle sister who had the post-baby blues and founded Belly Bandit (postpartum Belly Wraps were the first products created). We saw that during this momentous time it became all about baby, but mom also needed help as well. Then after I delivered in 2015 I found there was yet more areas in the market that was untapped which was leakproof underwear. We love to say that from periods to pregnancy and from postpartum to incontinence, the circle of life sometimes feels like the circle of leaks. Again, we needed to find an easier solution to deal with it!

I can speak for all of us when I say that we are most proud when we see the reviews come in from our customers. It motivates us to keep moving forward and creating.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well it’s been a hot minute since we’ve had guests but here’s what we usually do (when it’s not Covid!). First a visit to our favorite sushi place in the valley, Iroha, followed up with a post dinner massage at our favorite walk in foot massage spa right down the street. Then over the next few days (assuming they’ve seen all the touristy type of places like Hollywood Blvd., Universal etc.) we’ll go to Malibu and maybe eat at Taverna Tony’s, do a little bit of shopping down there at the Malibu Mart. Hit up Fairfax and 3rd for another day of lunch at farmers market and shopping, Always have to do a hike when the weather cools down and then grab a coffee at Philz. We also love going to Montana Ave, possibly jumping in the car and heading to Ojai for a night. As far as nightlife i’d phone a friend to see what the latest hot spots are – we are creatures of habit so the new and exciting places aren’t always on the radar.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think my recognition goes out to my sisters, forever the serial entrepreneurs who have endless creativity and a tremendous amount of stamina. They’ve set an example to never take no for an answer – not just for me but many other friends and women who run businesses.
