We had the good fortune of connecting with KVRIM and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi KVRIM, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in Croydon, South London (UK). I was introduced to music from a young age, mainly as a listener, having my older cousins & older brother around, babysitting or staying over, they would bring their tapes over and put me on to a lot of stuff that they listened to. One of my cousins was more into UK Garage & House music and another was more into R&B/Hip-hop so I was blessed to get a wider spectrum when it came to genres. I definitely gravitated more towards the R&B side of things but UK Garage/Grime etc, definitely has a special place in my heart. I think because I was such a heavy R&B listener, it drives my primary sound when it comes to producing. My adolescent years were spent in a city called Sheffield which we had moved to when I was like 11. Sheffield, in my opinion, was a dead-end city for me, it had a ceiling. Being around the bros on the block, one of which was already into music, pushed me to start DJ’ing…..which I got real good at & really enjoyed. (This is a pretty diluted story lol). I guess getting a taste of creativity in music fueled me to go into writing and then producing….. where I found the real love for creating music. At the age of 22 and a pretty tumultuous time in Sheffield, loss of friends to violence, dead end jobs and drama, I had decided to move to Toronto (where my cousin – the House music/Uk Garage listener) where my cousin was. Being in Toronto really gave me a perspective that I can really make things happen with music, through relationships and building of my network, I then set sail for the US 4 years ago…. and here I am today lol.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Music Producer. My passion for music brought me here, it was not easy, not a lot of people from Sheffield or even Croydon can say that music lead them to move to cities like NYC & La….the systems in those cities are not set up for that. Im grateful to be here.
I’m pretty much self taught, never had any formal training or lessons when it came to Producing music, but thankfully through collaboration, practice and time, I have learned and improved and can be confident to what i bring to the table.
I cannot wait for the world to continue to appreciate what I create with others.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being in LA always seems like a business trip for me, most of the time is spent in the studios lol. I do love JOEY by Manhattan beach though, that whole area is chill.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to shoutout Yonatan Watts – my brother and best friend… definitely a bro who has driven me to be consistent and motivated through tough times.
I would also like to shoutout Bri – my lady and best friend ….. she’s has been nothing but supportive through this journey and deserves all her flowers.
