We had the good fortune of connecting with Karin Tala and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karin, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking

I think in order to succeed, to actually fulfill your dreams you’re going to have to take a risk. Time passes by so quickly and at times we catch ourselves in the same place, nowhere near our goals because we’re too scared to make that next move. To take the risk, out of fear of making a mistake. But the only way to succeed is to actually push the ball and take the risk, it’s okay to make mistakes it’s how you grow and get closer to your goals. The only way we get better is by taking risks and making mistakes and that’s how your business will become stronger. Those mistakes are the lessons that are all a part of the journey. One of the biggest risks I took was opening my own company, but I couldn’t be more thankful that I took the risk. Did I know what I was getting myself into? No, I didn’t. Every day something new came up. A new obstacle that I had to figure out. I wasn’t prepared, but I took on the challenge and I learned.

What should our readers know about your business?

I’ve been in the clothing business for about 12 years now. As a young female, I started off in the wholesale business. I was as an agent, I had to look for good deals and move them in bulk to jobbers. My job wasn’t easy, I was looking for closeout deals (which is over-stock merchandise that companies want to get rid of at low cost) from the morning until the evening. In the beginning, I called companies and had to walk from store to store every day from 8am to 6pm.As a young entrepreneur, I faced a lot of rejections. Companies were being hard on me as a new buyer and weren’t so interested in working together because they didn’t take me seriously. It took me over 4 months to get my first deal. I stayed consistent with my schedule, calling and walking from store to store every day from 8am to 6pm. Finally, after seeing me so often a company decided to give me merchandise and I sold it. After I broke my dry spell with this company and got the deal, it all began. I was an agent for about 5 years and then I decided to open my own wholesale company. I am proud to say my hard work has paid off and it’s been successful. Throughout the years, even before getting into the industry, my friends and family were constantly asking me “where do you buy your clothes, what do I want.” I always had an eye for fashion which intrigued me to the wholesale business. However, I couldn’t sell wholesale to retailers. This sparked my dream. I decided to open fckdupgeneration, a clothing brand that gives you the option of buying items and being styled with exclusive pieces.

I learned that in the beginning is filled with a lot of excitement and you may want to do everything yourself. However, I’ve learned that we can’t do everything ourselves. It’s okay to get help. At times it gets scary because you may have already put so much time and money into opening a business and it’s still not where you want it to be, it can get confusing in those moments. But that’s okay, you may not know your every step before it happens. And I learned that it’s okay not to know the next step because there are people that do know, and that can help. Some may hesitate to hire someone due to control or just for financial reasons, it can be scary. But if you’re going to build a business you’re going to need help, you will need to invest in resources. I always do everything myself, and it took a toll on my business and myself. I learned how to become a list of different occupations. Was I good at them? Not all of them and I learned it’s overwhelming. That’s when I realized, you can’t do it all, which is fine! You will hire amazing assets in your company with time and patience. Not everyone will be the fit, but if you don’t begin the process you will never grow and find the key players that you need on your team. Because you know the entire business and it’s your business you will learn who to hire, it’s important to keep pushing yourself and to keep going with a team!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think Malibu, is beautiful! Being around the beach, and listening to the waves is the best way to start the day. I would take visiting friends to the best sushi place in town since and since it’s my friend I would treat them to Nobu Malibu for a fun fancy meal. 😉 My favorite casual restaurants are Honor Bar, Kazu Nori, Leo Tacos Truck, which are my top favorites. Some of those fun spots with music and food are Delilah’s, Off-Sunset, and Le Mesa. Just depends on the mood and vibe we’re going for! One thing I love about Los Angeles is the variety of options and how there’s always a new place to try out.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I was in high school I wasn’t the best girl in school. I was always ditching class and not taking my studies seriously. My parents decided that they wanted me to finish high school earlier. I started working in the clothing business when I was 17 years old as an agent. Unfortunately, my parent’s businesses weren’t doing the best and they were going through hard times. I became hungry and I had a lot of energy because I wanted help and to start taking care of myself so I can release pressure off them. Working as an agent, I would meet new people every single day and do business with different people all the time. I would like to thank the hardships that I went through and my family for making me strong like a warrior. My parents guided me to a better path, and the situations we were facing, shaped me into the person I am today. I thank them for that every day. I also would like to thank the people that actually took me seriously at such a young age and trusted me. Being a young female around older successful businessmen could be very intimating but I would like to thank myself for being so strong and getting to this point of my life.
