We had the good fortune of connecting with Karina Arrezola Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karina, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
One significant factor behind my success is not giving up. Being my own boss means I can schedule when I want to work and how long, which leads to how much money I can make. There are times when I have events that barely make my week or online sales are not coming in as expected. When this happens, the fear of not making enough to cover business expenses or not making enough for personal bills starts to creep, and suddenly, the idea of giving up on myself may come to mind. I’ve had this happen multiple times in my business, where I feel like quitting and going back to working a “regular” job. Having my own business is a roller coaster with many ups and downs, but I can’t give up after coming this far. When everything started opening up after being in lockdown like everyone else, I considered leaving my business so that I could feel “secure,” but nothing is ever “secure.” Corporates let go of their people every day and find a replacement a day after; though I may struggle at times, I wouldn’t give up on my business or myself only to be replaced a day later elsewhere.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I want to say that what sets me apart from others is me just being genuine with my customers. I try to make my customers feel like they can return to my business and feel welcomed, not just a place to take their money. I enjoy getting to know my customers and what they like. I want to say that I have different styles of jewelry pieces because we all don’t like the same thing. From the beginning of my business, I wanted to provide excellent customer service as I would like when I shop elsewhere.
I’m excited to take my brand to other states, and I plan to do this with Patches & Pins, an amazing event that has been one of my go-to for vending. Last year in 2021, I got the chance to go to Phoenix, and wow, I was so excited, proud & full of emotions because I never planned that. So for 2022, that’s something I’m looking forward to.
If owning a business was easy, more people would be doing it, but it’s not. Some of the challenges of owning a business are learning to grow your business and getting the brand out to people. Making sure that I stand out from other companies like mine is hard, and I can say that it’s a tough challenge, but with time my business has grown its own identity. Though it may be so easy to compare my business to others, I try not to see or think of that because that’s when doubt starts to set in.
If I could share my brand with the world I would want them to know that FORTH UNIT is more than just jewelry. FORTH UNIT means to move forward as one. Jewelry has given me so much more than I could ever imagine. It brings so much happiness and I would want to share that with everyone.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had to plan the whole weekend, the first spot would be to check out GRAND CENTRAL MARKET!. GCM has a little bit of everything and it also has small local businesses in their weekend BAZAAR (which I also vend at :)! Breakfast at Jose Chiquito, Lunch at DTLA cheese & dinner at Knead Noods all in one place. Another great spot to check out would be the Griffith Observatory, a small hike, and enjoy a beautiful view of Los Angeles.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are quite a few important individuals that have helped me succeed by continuously supporting me & my brand. My husband in particular has seen my business grow into what it has, when I doubt myself he manages to break me out of that by reminding me of how far I’ve come. I can also say I’ve met amazing business owners that have shared their stories with me and we support each other when things get tough. Lastly, my family & friends have seen me struggle and encourage me to continue pursuing my business, when I need help I know who to count on.
