Meet Karla Ress | A Hair Artist, and innovative content creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Karla Ress and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karla, what are you inspired by?
I’m inspired everyday just by a feeling and an emotion, a sensory experience. How when you walk around many beautiful buildings it creates an emotion. I feel instantly adventurous seeking thrill. Visually I see people walking around with the one accessory they never take off, their hair and how hair moves around as they move through the Architect design of these buildings. That inspires me being able to witness it and feel it. I truly feel that there’s inspiration in anything you’re truly passionate about just waiting to be felt.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a hair artist and I just remember a few yrs ago being a teen doing DIY hair and which later led me to attend Beauty School. After graduating cosmetology, I was excited for my future a month later I assisted in a really cool and busy salon and I was stoked like me lil Karla Ress really got an opportunity and I ran with it. I was eager to learn and it just felt right, the start of something new which ive been looking forward too. Mentorship is important and I learned so much, yet till this day I’m always open to learning even more. There’s always opportunity to learn something new. You could never know everything. I’ve had the opportunity to do beautiful hair behind the chair and generate social media content which later exposed me and brought out this other endeavor to do hair videography. I got to tour around the world and create hair content for others while gaining amazing knowledge. Doing hair is something I love, I’ve never wanted to feel like a gig because hair ignites this spark in me to unleash creativeness. However just like any artist our challenges we face is creative block/ burn out. sometimes you do something to much that’s not so your vibe and then it no longer becomes enjoyable, so I gave myself time to recharge and fuel inspiration. I get inspiration through sensory experience. Hair is a representation of art and architect and fashion, the list goes on how i feel and can describe what I see when i do hair. I then I realized facilitating and educating is something I’ve always wanted to do, it’s scary presenting in front of lots of people sometimes, but not following your passions or dreams is much scarier. Life is going to constantly change or shift, one thing that should remain the same is feeling passionate about something, for me its hair artistry. follow your intuition there’s no wrong starting something new as long as it feels right to you, <3
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Fave Spots on an Adventure Day our first pit stop would be thirsty girl coffee for us to get some cute pink girly coffees. then take a train ride to union station and led us to our next fun spot. Kyoto garden in DTLA and watch the sunset while we eat our cute hello kitty snacks.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I remember graduating beauty school and watching these videos of artist auditioning for a Vidal Sasson scholarship thru a YouTube video. “JOY LAMAY” her video was so moving. It lives rent free in my mind. I would rewatch that video when I was having a bad day because the way she spoke about hair. I’ve never felt so understood in my life. I felt the same way. How she described how the artistry of hair made her feel and hair having this power to change people lives. Such a powerful video, 11 yrs later and I still go back and play it from time to time. I also was definitely inspired by many hair artists, growing and up and coming in a big and busy salon I learned everything I know there, Kut Haus Claremont is my roots and I grew up there, much move to many mentors there, I learned a lot.
