We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Baez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kat, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
As a fashion designer, I feel that I have to contribute to a more sustainable world because it’s no secret that the fashion industry is one of the top three industries that pollutes the most. that’s why I focus on offering a service that revives old garments form wardrobes, giving them a second life by textil intervention or transformation, also by creatively using scraps, I can craft entirely new pieces of clothes. This approach not only reduces textile waste but also encourages people to rethink their clothing disposal habits. By extending the life cycle of these products, we can reduce waste, contributing to a more sustainable world.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My designs always comes from the “do it yourself” concept. I believe that everyone has the ability to be creative, create and shine. I like to stand out by designing exclusive pieces, and for that, I love using textile scraps, vintage garments, and intervening clothes by embroidering or painting them. I also want to inspire others through my designs or Instagram videos (@kathebaez) to do the same. For me, it’s about not being afraid to break things to create something new, and not being afraid to stand out by being or using something different.
In my professional life, opportunities have opened up because I have trusted in the universe and my intuition countless times. I have embraced uncertainty, and as funny as it may sound, being open to change has led me to multiple opportunities that have contributed to my growth as a fashion designer. The lesson I have learned is to trust that there will always be something more or something better. If life takes something away, it’s because it’s redirecting you for your greater good. You shouldn’t be stubborn; you should listen to the timing of God, the universe, life—however you choose to call it—but always trust. 555.
This way of thinking is reflected in my designs. I have great confidence in myself and in what the fabric communicates me to let the ideas flow.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would recommend walking melrose street, shopping on vintage stores and discover new places.
A very cool place to disconnect to take a break would be Kenneth Hahn and and aThe Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Garden.
FIDM Museum for the fashion lovers and The Bradbury Building or for architecture lovers.
West Hollywood public library or the last book store.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a special shoutout to my mom, my grandparents, and my dad. They’ve always been my unwavering support. They constantly remind me that I can achieve anything I set my mind to, no matter how delulu it might sound. They support even my craziest dreams.
My mom was a single parent, so I was raised by my grandparents in Colombia. While she has been an incredible role model for hard work, discipline, dedication, and love, my grandparents were my mentors, offering advice and guidance, and they were my confidants when I needed to keep secrets from my mom.
A big shoutout also goes to Mateo Nikolav and Jason Eldredge, my L.A. family. They made me fall in love with this city and dream as big as I do. I’m so grateful to have them as friends.
Lastly, to all my friends from my hometown in Colombia who always wished the best for me and encouraged me to shine.
Love them all.
