We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Lively and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kat, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking

Without taking risks, you risk getting nowhere. If you want more from life, you have to risk and sacrifice more than the average person is willing to.
I created ‘Calling Old Hollywood’ from passion to what resonates with me on a personal level. In the beginning stages I asked myself every day for two months “Is this something I can see myself doing for months? Years? Possibly evolving into an entire career and leading somewhere completely different than even I envision? Do I love this that much?”.  My biggest drive in life is passion, that is what cushions my anxiety when it comes to risk taking, and the result of rejection that may come with risk taking. I know if l’m doing something I’m passion about, then there is no risk too great, no time too long, no rejection too hard, and no person who could do anything or say anything to detour me from what I am doing. In short— find your passion, go after it, then give it everything you’re made of for as long as you can, in as many ways as you can.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I created ‘The Calling Old Hollywood Podcast’ in December 2019 in efforts to contribute to the preservation of Film, Television, and Music history. This means Actors, Actresses, Comedians, Musicians and other incredible people from the 1930’s – 1980’s who were so uniquely innovative and brilliant in their crafts and talent. It has evolved into a Youtube Channel where I have interviewed Natasha Wagner (daughter of Natalie Wood), Bruce Vilanch (Comedian/Writer), Danny Hutton (Founding member of ‘Three Dog Night’), Tyrone Power Jr. (Son of Actor Tyrone Power), Marcus Winslow (Cousin to James Dean), Dan Rice (Owner of 66-to-Cali and Route 66 Historian), and so many others. Just recently I’ve begun receiving opportunities to interview classic stars in person at Film Festivals, this includes the upcoming Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention in Maryland, where I’ll be interviewing Jerry Mathers and Tony Dow from ‘Leave It To Beaver’, as well as Actress Mary Badham from ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ later this month in front of a live audience. Aside from the podcast interviews and film festival interviews, I also feature historic locations on my Youtube Channel. This includes classic filming locations, former homes of classic stars, and much more.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Funny you mention, I somewhere nearly always land the role of ‘unofficial tour guide’ when friends and family come to town.

I always take them on tours of where their favorite stars once lived, or where their favorites films were made. Depending on the person on their taste, I modify what I take them around to see but as a rule of thumb I always try to include the following :
The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the scenic overlook on Mulholland Drive, Griffith Observatory, the Sunset Strip, The Comedy Store, Musso & Frank, The Smokehouse, Warner Brothers, Westwood Memorial Park, Hollywood Boulevard, Rodeo Drive, The Formosa, and for a drive along PCH.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A few wonderful people in my life whom I can’t thank express gratitude enough to is : Adeline, my Dad, Danielle Walters, Kaylei, Deanna & Josh, Susie & Kirk Cesnik, Dan Rice, Karie Bible, and Tony E. Black.

I also feel compelled to mention my biggest loves in classic (and retro) Film / Television, because it’s these people specifically whose work inspired me to create ‘Calling Old Hollywood’ :
James Dean, Natalie Wood, John Ritter, Dean Martin, James Stewart, Rodney Dangerfield, and Lauren Bacall.
