We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Satava and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kat, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I didn’t at first. I was a young single mom. An artistic career did have the stability I felt I needed to provide for my family, at the time I was making decisions about careers and the future. I figured like every one of my idols, I would need to have a day job and write by flashlight after my kids were all asleep. Turns out most day jobs don’t leave a ton of energy left over to dedicate to crafting stories. Thankfully, the Universe made me take a step back and truly see how not pursuing my career as an author, had become detrimental to my overall mental health which then trickled out through so many areas of my life. I shifted gears and pursued incomes that allowed me to make time for my author life versus just paying bills. Investing my time and energy into Maddening Moon Manuscripts, LLC, my publishing imprint and author service provider business, allows me the sanctioned time to be an author and have an impact on other authors as well as readers so that one day it can be my primary career that sustains me and my family.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an author. I share my experiences and thoughts through the stories of fantastical creatures and epic adventures. In addition to writing my own stories, I also run a small publishing imprint and author service agency, Maddening Moon Manuscripts, LLC. which is going through preparation for a growth spurt by the end of 2024. We will have spots available in our online groups for using fiction writing for coping and maintaining overall mental health, as well as guidance through the independent publishing process. We also have a podcast hosted by myself interviewing indie authors called Hooked By The First Chapter, that is currently in production. We also are taking on new clients for book-shepherding, editing, and proofreading. So that is a lot to say, I am in the growing stages of my author career. It is never easy. It is like being a single mom as a career. You have to wear so many hats and educate yourself on so many things that you have to master, not just understand. The only way to survive it and move forward is to learn how to prioritize. You have to be brutal with knowing your abilities and the desire to use them. If you try something out and it doesn’t work you have to be willing to move on and try the next. And you will get out of it what you put into it. If you want full time results you have to give full time effort at minimum.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In my area, it really is all about the beauty of the desert and the creativity of the people who live in the Southwest. Phoenix is home to so many transplants there is a variety of cultural activities, events, and places to visit and explore. Knowing me and the book nerd that I am Changing Hands and Poison Pen Bookstore, both pretty infamous for being places frequented by Stephanie Meyer when she still lived in Scottsdale and Diana Galbaldon who still lives in our Grand Canyon state. Which also is a must see even if you are just passing through Arizona.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To the strong badass women in my life, you all are the inspiration for my characters, for the stories that I tell, for the way I help others express themselves through writing. It’s all because of women like my grandmother, my mom, my aunts by friendship, my sister, and the amazing women I call friends. I surround myself with the women I hope and aspire to be like one day.
